Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Miller.
Hi Kara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My first experience in photography came in 2016. Visiting with a friend at a coffee shop, she mentioned she was selling her DSLR camera, and she asked me if I wanted to buy it. My husband was interested in one for his work, so we decided to get it. I picked it up and started taking photos of my daughters and realized how much fun it was. I still knew very little about photography, so my friend directed me to online classes which I took and loved. From there a hobby emerged, and I was learning new things about a new craft that inspired me. Soon my friends discovered my photos on social media and asked me to take photos of their kids. Not long after discovering this hobby, I started a business. I love documenting life in one particular moment in time for families. Photos tell the story, taking you back to those family moments that would have otherwise been forgotten.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like anything in life, this journey has had its ups and downs. My first priority is as a mom and wife. My husband and I have four daughters, and our youngest is two. I stay home with her which is an absolute blessing. I love that this career path is flexible; however, there are moments when it is a struggle to balance home life and work life, especially when my home office is also my laundry room and art room. I just do the best I can as a mom and as a photographer, and I try not to be too hard on myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a photographer, and I love working with families. The first subjects I ever shot with my used camera were my daughters in 2016. I wanted to freeze that moment in time to remember it later, but it also provided a great creative outlet. I like to capture families while they are in the moment, on the move. My tagline is ‘capturing memories is a walk in the park’ because we literally walk in parks during our sessions, but I also want the experience of working with me to be relaxed and fun. I want to give kids the opportunity to enjoy the moment with their families, and I want parents have a stress-free experience. I like to tell jokes and keep the mood light.
I also offer newborn, senior, engagement, and maternity sessions.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Joining professional organizations such as Professional Photographers of America and Shultz Photo School have allowed me to network. In fact, while taking an online course, I was able to connect with another photographer who actually lives in the Austin area. We share ideas, and she has been so helpful as I start studio photography. Professional organizations keep you growing in your craft, motivating you to try new things.
