Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Graf.
Elizabeth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My baking career started when I was six years old. I was a creative kid, and have always been a sugar addict. I loved experimenting with new recipes on my family, so there was always an abundance of sweets lying around the house. Because of my creative flair, I decided to attend Texas State University and study communication design. After a bad critique in an art class one day, I called my parents for advice. My love and passion was still in baked goods, and I was ready to move in that direction. My parents supported my decision and gave me the motivation I needed to pursue my baking career. By the end of the year, I had made plans to move to Austin, and pursue my dream of becoming a pastry chef. With no experience, finding a job wasn’t easy. I finally landed a low-paying starter cake decorator job at a small cake shop. I worked a second food-service job in the evenings to make rent. I was working 60-hour weeks, but I was passionate about my work, and that made the hours worth it. After six months, I was given a raise, and able to quit my evening job. Three bakery jobs later, I was ready to start my own cake business, and Elizabeth Graf Cakes began.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In running my own business, I have had to balance work with my home life. I have been in business for about 2 years, and I had my daughter eight months ago. Learning to balance cake decorating with a new baby can be a challenge.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a cake decorator, and I design completely custom cakes made entirely of sugar-y goodness. Most of my work is wedding cakes and large special event cakes. I do anything and everything for cakes, but, especially, lots of sculpted florals and buttercream designs.
My clients will tell you my cakes taste as good as they look. I am a perfectionist by nature, and I strive for excellence both inside and out on all of my cakes. I patiently work with each of my clients down to the last detail to create their vision for the cake.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I have worked very hard to be where I am and to have my business. God has given me a creative gift. I am proud and thankful for each client who comes to me looking to design them a cake.
