Today we’d like to introduce you to Pixx E. Legion.
Hi Pixx E., thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Pretty Wicked started as a way to get rid of all the crafty nonsense I had started to create as a result of being jobless in Los Angeles. After I moved back home, to Texas, in 2016 I became a registered business and attend my 1st pop up– The San Marcos Mermaid Festival 🧜🏻♀️💜 As well as hosting a monthly Witches’ Market at Wake the Dead Coffeehouse in San Marcos, Pretty Wicked is one of the oldest vendors of the Austin Witches Market, breaking ground at Buzzmill off Riverside in 2017, and continuing to appear once a month there, or at the or the newly rebranded Wyrdwood Village off Airport.
I get inspiration for my art from nature and the cycle of life and death. I use a lot of found bones in my artwork, but I also love sparkly things, like crystals, or colorful flowers — and to me, it’s all circular. Life is beautiful, but without death, “life” has no meaning — without darkness, there is no “light.” My art, my flowers, my curations — they all strive to remind people that the most beautiful things in life grow from nothing and to nothing we will all return, giving new life to new beauty. ✨
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s rare to find an artist who’s had an EASY time finding success in their medium 😅 But no, becoming even partially financially dependent on my art has been a struggle, and there have been ups and downs– but I can’t imagine doing anything else now. I’ve never really been cut out for a corporate job, and I have a problem being told what to do outside of a script, so finding jobs like the work I do for the gardens at Wake the Dead, and pouring myself into my art– the occasion acting job– and I can get by just fine. There were talks once of a brick and mortar, but after our investor pulled out, it all fell through– so definitely lows as well as highs, but the art comes whether I want it or not. I’ve also struggled with my mental health my entire life, and finding expression through creating things has been more than just, a little, helpful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do a little bit of everything, but my main mediums are clay, crystals, wire, textile, and herbals/plants. My Herbal Cigarette pre-rolls have become very popular in Austin, and I pride myself on creating one-of-a-kind jewelry and altarpieces with carefully curated semi-precious stones, genuine gold, brass, and silver findings. My larger decor pieces bring together, ethically sourced bones, light-catching glass, delicate crystals, plants, and other natural beauty, in a dance of life and death.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I found some deer ribs in the woods when I was younger and decided to make my mom a birthday gift out of them, I consider that to be my 1st ever Pretty Wicked piece
