Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Oxner.
Hi Dominique, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well my name is Dominique and I am a wedding planner here in Austin! I started in the industry 7 years ago as a floral assistant and made my way into coordination and planning. I grew up in Cedar Park, I have lived in central Texas most of my life and now I own a home in South east Austin. I am a mother of 3 cats, Harrison Sawyer who is 7 years old, Serena Renee who is 2 years old and Winter Leighton who is 1. They run the household and I am allowed to live with them!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all, my wedding journey has not been easy. I began PHOX weddings and events during the Pandemic. In June of 2020, I was working for a local wedding venue and I was called in by the owner one day and unexpectedly laid. As hard as it was to lose my income during such an uncertain time, it was the loss of my clients and not being able to see the weddings I’d already worked on that really hurt. My options at that point were to find another job or work to establish a business where I get to work with my clients in the way that I found best. It took me a bit over two months to set the groundwork in place but I launched my company on September 1 of 2020. I was a bit naïve and expected to be an overnight success. I thought my books would fill immediately, they didn’t of course. In 2020, I did four weddings, in 2021 I did 11, thus far this year we have 20 for 2022 and are still booking for the fall. I think we do good work, I care about my clients, and while things aren’t always easy I try to learn from the bumps to be better every wedding! I have rolled with the punches and when things get difficult I ask myself if the difficulty is enough to make me quit. Every time the answer has been no.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an Event planner, I specialize in weddings and love creating my clients’ visions. I love that we are going on 2 years old and I am able to work with vendors I have met during my time in the industry to create gorgeous days! I think that I have a nontraditional perspective on weddings and my goal is to serve my clients. I don’t know if that makes me different from anyone else but it is what my clients like about me.
What matters most to you? Why?
I want to make sure that my clients have a voice on their own wedding day. So many times couples get overwhelmed by tradition, expectations and other people’s opinions. I try to make sure that we cut through the noise so that we can get to what they want. It is their day, and it is important to me that they have a happy wedding day.
