Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Hill.
Amber, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
How did I get started? Wow, that’s an unexpectedly tough question to answer. I’m one of those ‘everything happens for a reason’ types of gals, so I guess how I got started was through a series of life events. I have always enjoyed decorating but it wasn’t until we purchased our fixer-upper in 2016 that I became a tad obsessed with it.
Two years prior to moving, we live in a spec new build. It was fine but I had to decorate to what I had been given and not necessarily what I would have chosen as far as finishes go. The cabinets were brown, the granite was brown, the walls were beige…you get the gist. When we decided to move, I knew it was going to be a lot of hard work and a lot of FUN! It was the first time that I got to choose everything I wanted (Well, within reason. We did have a pretty tight budget.) and decide which walls would stay and which walls would go and it was AMAZING! I documented the renovation through social media and eventually created an Instagram “home” page that was just things that I did around my house. Later friends asked for decor help and then more friends did and it became a thing and I loved it! My husband called me “The Mother Theresa” of design because I never charged for it. Maybe a margarita here and there but never actual money.
When Covid hit, I pulled my girls out of school (then 3rd and 5th grade) and homeschooled them. As much as I loved my time with them, I couldn’t help but feel a little empty. After the school year was over, I knew I had to start this business for myself. To my surprise and delight, I got my first client right out of the gate and I haven’t slowed down yet. It has been a crazy ride and I am extremely thankful for it!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been extremely fortunate to work with wonderful clients. Most of my experiences have been seamless with the exception of some supply and shipping delays. In today’s retail climate, that’s par for the course and I really can not complain. I’ve been able to pivot to keep deadlines while still maintaining the aesthetic of the core design.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think I’m most know for intentional design. I want each of my clients to feel that their space was designed for them and nobody else. My goal with each design is to make it functional, practical and beautiful. I take the time to get to know my client and try to add personal touches in all of my designs. I think that is what sets me apart from others in the industry…I want your space to look like you, not me.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
So…the list is pretty long. My husband and close friends are my biggest cheerleaders but it was an Instagram follower who has played the biggest role in my career thus far. He started following my home page before I started my business, so he had an idea of my style. Once I announce the start of my design business, he messaged me and asked if I would like to write a proposal to source and install FF&E (furniture, fixtures and equipment) for an apartment model unit. His company purchases and rebrands apartment complexes nationally and so far I’ve been fortunate enough to complete three projects for him in Austin, TX, Boston, MA, and Houston, TX.
