Meet Zoey Basinger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoey Basinger.

Hi Zoey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As far back as I can remember, I’ve been interested in all things beauty and art. I loved playing around with my Barbie’s hair, giving them different haircuts and styles. When I was in high school, I attended cosmetology school classes and graduated both at the same time. Right after graduating, I started a two year apprenticeship at a luxury salon in Tucson, AZ, where I’m originally from, and began cultivating my skills as a stylist. When I moved to Austin in 2016, I began working in special event and wedding styling, both in-salon and freelance. During that time, I began to cultivate my love for styling- blowouts, updos and braiding. In 2018, I began working at Method Hair where I furthered my education and skill set through countless classes and found my passion for creative coloring and cutting. As of October 2021, I am an independent stylist at a salon in downtown Austin, running my own small business and doing what I love!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey as a stylist hasn’t always been the smoothest! There’s more to hairstyling than meets the eye. I think for many stylists, myself included, burnout is a reality we may face. We work long hours on our feet, sometimes without breaks, which can take a toll physically. What I’ve learned throughout the years is you have to take time for self-care, take breaks when necessary, and stay inspired! I’ve found that the more I educate myself, the more I find passion and motivation to keep going.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist who specializes in hair color, haircutting, and extensions. For color, I’m known for creating natural, lived-in colors, vivids, and blondes.

For haircutting, I have an affinity for razor cutting and enhancing natural hair textures. I am known to create seamless, effortless layers and movement.

As for hair extensions, I use both hand-tied and tape-in methods to enhance hair length and density.

I also have experience in wedding, special event, and editorial styling.

So far, I’m most proud of taking the leap into becoming an independent stylist, as well as all of my hard work and resilience. I have invested a lot of time into my education so I can give my clients the best possible experience and results, and continue to do so. There’s always room to grow and learn!

What sets me apart from others is that I’m passionate about helping people embrace their individuality through their hair. Whether it’s enhancing their length with extensions or brightening their color with balayage, I’m all about bringing people’s dreams and visions to life. Seeing the joy a new hairstyle brings to people is magical to me and a huge reason that I love what I do!

Something else that sets me apart is that hair health is always a main priority. I love to teach people how to achieve optimal hair health through products and treatments that are customized for their hair type and texture. I’ve helped many clients repair and revitalize their hair, bringing it back to it’s best state. Happy, healthy hair is always the goal!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The Covid-19 Crisis has made hairstyling more challenging in several ways. I was out of work for about three months at the start of the pandemic due to state regulations. When we were able to return to the salon, we followed a very strict protocol to keep everyone safe. During that time, I learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. The Covid-19 pandemic was an unprecedented time, all we could do was take things day by day. Although we may not be able to control the circumstances of the world around us, we can implement necessary changes within our own practices to keep everyone safe and thriving.
