Hidden Gems: Meet Anksina Amatyakul of Violet Beauty Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anksina Amatyakul.

Anksina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Austin. Both my parents are from Thailand, and I’m a first-generation American. So growing up here with my family being immigrants was always tough. I’ve always been self-driven and goal-oriented. My family had a Thai restaurant in 2008. Business was good, but it wasn’t something I truly wanted to run. Running a restaurant is tough. I started thinking about what I truly wanted to do as a career. I was pursuing the medical field and was a MA for a few years. Until I realized it wasn’t something I was truly happy with. In 2017, I decided to try out the beauty industry. I went ahead and started being a nail tech. I’ve worked at Gilt Nail Bar, Lavish Nails, and Coated Nails. Dedicated to each salon until Covid came along and shut 2 out of the 3 salons down. I decided then to open a mini salon with my business partner, Jennifer Honda. We officially opened Violet Beauty Bar in July 2021 and have been doing well since. We since then have added permanent makeup services, fat dissolve services, and soon we will add facial and wax services. It’s been tough with the pandemic and recession we’ve faced, but we have been going strong and have dedicated clients, thank God! Our salon is our 2nd home and we love taking care of it and anyone who visits. So we’re definitely humbled and appreciative of what we have today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, the struggle lol. My first year of being a nail tech, I actually developed an allergy to acrylic. So bad to where I would break out with contact dermatitis. It was very depressing. For years I’ve had acrylics on my own nails, I’ve did it for clients and one day out of the blue, my body decided to reject it. No matter how many gloves I wore, or Benadryl I took, it just did not work out for me anymore. Anyone who is a nail tech knows that acrylic nails make money. It’s what most people wanted for years. It was so upsetting that I felt like giving up my nail tech career at times, but I didn’t. I stuck to Gel, SNS, and currently picked up doing Gel-X nails which are nail extensions made soft gel. I just kept going despite it affecting my health. If there was a problem, I just went around it and found another way to make it happen.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m part owner and co-founder of Violet Beauty Bar and we are located at 5601 Brodie Lane. We specialize in nails, brows, body sculpt, and permanent makeup. We are still a growing business and we’re always looking for other techs to join us. We’re known for having a clean and sanitized setting. We’re appointments only so you can have that special one-on-one time with us. We focus on you and you only during your time here. We’re proud to offer our OPI and Apres products. We also provide home services as well. We are licensed mobile nail techs that can come out and take care of you. Whether you just had a newborn or an elderly, or you’re just too tired to go the salon, we can always come to you.
