Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Meyer.
Hi Andrea, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Mexico City, I was surrounded by art and culture. Of course, when I was younger, I counted the minutes until the tour guide finished his speech at the museum, or I’d find excuses to skip a family field trip to el Zócalo, the city center. As I became older and college approached, I frequently found myself at a crossroads of wanting to participate in a creative industry but not identifying as an artist myself. I moved to New York for college, and through internships and volunteering, I discovered I don’t have to produce art to be close to it. The art world realm is bigger than I’d imagined. And so my adventure began.
The start of the pandemic coincided with the expiration of my student visa, and with it my permit to be in the US. I moved back to Mexico hoping to start my career and was faced with an unstable economy in which no one wanted to hire young talent. Scrolling on social media, I discovered incredible local artists and I had an urge to connect and collaborate with them. I ventured out and met with a few, discovering along the way that they were happy to have someone help them sell their work. On the other hand, while reconnecting with high school friends, I noticed people of my generation want to own incredible art, but are too afraid to look for it, or too intimidated by the viral auction house prices to believe they can. This is how &mey Artviser was born, out of the desire to make art more accessible and attainable.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a project in the middle of the pandemic has definitely come with struggles and challenges, some surprising and others expected. I believed finding talented artists that would allow me to sell their work would be difficult, but it proved to be one of the most exciting parts! Finding clients, on the other hand, has definitely proven to be a challenge. They’re guided by their misconceptions that art is expensive and that trendy art is valuable when the reality is much different. This is something I try to change by introducing some of the artists I work with and showing a variety of incredible works that are not necessarily expensive or something you’ve seen on TikTok.
Trusting the process is definitely another great challenge I’ve faced while embarking on this venture. One day everything seems unachievable and the next, you’ve already sold two or three pieces. I’ve learned you have to trust your gut and believe in yourself, or else no one else will.
As you know, we’re big fans of &Mey Artviser. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
&Mey Artviser is an art advising service that offers curated artworks based on style, budget, and space. Art shouldn’t be transactional. Rather than going online and buying a painting or photograph off a website, we show you work from emerging and young artists based in Mexico that fit what you’re looking for. It can be challenging and intimidating to navigate the art world, but we’re here to help. Since we don’t have a physical space, we share a proposal with different artworks based on the specifications previously agreed on, and even include renders of the works in your home or space. As for costs, we respect the artists’ pricing with no added markups so you’re not paying extra and the whole process is smooth and transparent.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
There’s nothing more valuable and wholesome to me than community. Spending time with my family is where I’ll always feel at home. Being surrounded by friends that care and share with me is priceless. Meeting like-minded individuals that inspire me to do more and be my best is always humbling. There’s a famous saying that goes, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and although I don’t have children and have never raised one, I’m a firm believer that it takes a village for anyone to grow and cherish. You have to surround yourself with people that support you, push you, embrace you, and hold you up. And you have to do the same for those around you.
