Hidden Gems: Meet Renee Combs of Well-Fueled Life Nutrition and Movement

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Combs.

Hi Renee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in suburban Upstate New York, I had the opportunity to be active with my friends and the ability to enjoy the outdoors and beautiful landscapes the area had to offer. I became active in sports at a young age and loved playing soccer as a teen. That love of soccer turned into a passion for running and fitness as I grew into my 20s. There was something about running that drew me in from the beginning. I began to use it to connect with friends, reduce stress, and, most importantly, reconnect to myself. It was a form of self-care I needed, especially as a new mom to twin boys and then a third to follow, all within 3 years. Over those first 10 years, I ran 2 marathons in one year and over 12 half marathons and loved every minute!

The movement became an important part of my life as my family grew. My husband and I would take them on runs and bike rides, and we always enjoyed watching and playing sports with them. At that time, I equated wellness with fitness. I thought as long as I moved, I was healthy. I truly believe movement is a foundation for health and wellness. Still, my perspective made a major turn when I watched my mother’s life be cut short by two chronic diseases that she could not manage with the habits she had created in her life and the information she was given (or lack of information that is!). Then, I decided I needed to look at health more holistically for myself and my family.

My mom’s passing truly opened my eyes to how precious our lives are and how each habit we create, how we move (or don’t move), and what we do and put into our bodies matter. That is when I decided to leave my corporate job at Dell and go all in. I began with myself by creating a movement routine I enjoyed and changing how I was eating. I began to eat real food and more of it (yes, I said it, I began to eat more!) Not only was I seeing a change in my physical self but also in my emotions and how I approached each day. It was then that I decided I wanted to know more! I am naturally a helper and a learner, so I began to educate myself in functional movement and nutrition and became a certified personal trainer and a Certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner.

This has become my true calling! I am now using my passion and education to help others, and their families change their narrative and get the information and guidance to take control of their wellness at an early age and become proactive with their health. That passion has brought me to help mid-life parents, especially busy moms, care for themselves with nutrition, movement, and lifestyle habits.

I am currently working to prepare my boys for their next transition after high school while building a business that I love. I am using my experiences, knowledge, and current life and health journeys as models for them and supporting my clients through their lives and aspirations of health and longevity.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has not always been a smooth ride. I was faced with a cross-country move with my family for a year. We moved to Portland, Oregon, for my husband’s job, but we found that move not a fit and came back to Texas a year later. Although that move was stressful, it forced me to get out of my comfort zone, make new networks and create new perspectives on how life presents us challenges.  That new perspective is helping with the new challenges that come with building a business. I am working to use vulnerabilty and authenticity to take chances and build my business imperfectly.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business Well-Fueled Life takes the overwhelm out of fitness and nutrition.  I supports clients through functional movement and nutrition and meet people where they are at.  At Well-Fueled Life, it is about helping clients understand healthy movement and nutrition is obtainable and can be simplified with small sustainable habits. I provide 1:1 and group programs to educate, guide, and support my clients through their journey.

As a certified nutritionist and personal training specialist I use a holistic, bio-individual approach along with functional assessments and testing to help uncover and address underlying root causes and imbalances in my client’s bodies and metabolism. I am also currently working on an all-inclusive membership program that will combine fitness, nutrition education and support and group accountabilty to help my clients reboot and sustain a healthy metabolism.

What sets Well-Fueled Life apart from others is how I build relationships and my altruistic heart. I look at each person individually and will do all my power to help them reach the next step and work towards their goals. My brand content is in it’s infancy, but I am truly the foundation of my brand. That is what I am proud of—being my authentic self, caring, and empathetic. I am proud to go on the journey in parallel with my clients which gives me an edge to support them in real-time and from current experiences. I want readers to know that my services are individualized to each person’s body while walking them through the steps and actions at the their own pace. We look at how their movement, lifestyle, and diet are interconnected. We do not merely try to fix or reduce their symptoms but analyze their life holistically to uncover root causes so we can begin to address those and they can reshape their life with sustainable habits and actions.

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
Risk-taking. I generally am not very risky to the point of analyzing things too much and not taking risks. Each day in this business journey, I work to show myself on social media and present my brand to others with confidence in authentic conversation. The biggest risk I have taken so far is leaving my comfortable, well-paying corporate job to pursue this new career and I would not change it for the world!

I now consider risk a necessary part of life; if not accepted, we do not grow. One of my goals is to help others realize that the best things happen when we take risks and overcome our fears! I want my clients to entrust me to guide them to take  steps towards finding their best life.
