Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Cheung.
Hi Patrick, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always wanted to open a coffee/tea shop. My first job was a barista at the local college coffee shop and it is still my favorite to this day – the atmosphere, the people, everything.
After graduating, several years went by as I began an engineering career with several companies across the US. The only thing consistent during this period was my morning matcha.
Then in October 2021, I just decided to start. The only thing for certain was that nothing would be perfect so I dove right in.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Everything has been challenging – in a fun way! Learning how to set up a business, building a website, and navigating logistics has been quite the ride. And I am still learning every day.
Now Central Matcha has a solid foundation. We have overcome a ton of supplier and logistics issues to date. Now, most of the operations have been streamlined and we are focusing on growth. We are looking at different ways to share our love of matcha – social media, flyers, ads, and even local markets.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
During the day, I am working a full-time engineering position in the retail industry with a major grocery store in Austin, TX. My role involves collecting and analyzing data to support cross-functional teams. Goal is to make data-driven decisions that benefit both customers and businesses (win-win solutions!).
And at night and weekends, I focus on Central Matcha. Customer service, supplier management, packing/shipping orders, testing future projects- I do it all!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Persistence. I can be stubborn at times :). But in business that is a valuable asset; there will be lots of doors closed and calls ignored. Just have to keep going.
One of my peers once told me: “Be undeniable”. Central Matcha will be exactly that.
