Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Laser.
Lindsay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was raised in South Austin and have been creating for as long as I can remember. I got into painting around ten years ago and haven’t stopped since. During quarantine, I decided I wanted to paint something every day and my theme would be clouds. During my walks, I took note of the different colors and forms, and the way the light played, and painted one each day. This inspired me to explore gradient and ambient space in my interpretations of the world around me. My themes have changed some, but I am still currently deep in the trenches of this exploration. Newer themes, for me, include architecture and more rigid forms. Maxfield Parrish is one of my major influences and I plan to explore some similar themes in my work, with a more modern twist. I look forward to seeing what else can unfold from this path in the future.
However, I have been doing pet portraits for about seven years now and feel as though I’ve really settled in with myself on that endeavor. I love animals and I love painting them, and I think it shows in my work.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think it has been as smooth as I let it be, the only thing that really gets in my way is myself. I think when it comes to art, there can be existential hurdles such as, “Do I have a style?”, “Should I sell this?”, “What is my value in the art world?” However, I’ve learned being patient with myself is the most helpful thing I can do. I’ve certainly wanted to force inspiration and personal answers, but what I’ve learned is inspiration will come when it’s supposed to and it will feel wonderful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I primarily work in acrylic, but am currently learning oil painting. Most of the work I sell is pet portraits. The work I do with clouds and still lives, is currently a personal project for galleries. However, when it comes to pet portraits, I’ve had a decent amount of success and I know that it’s the realism contrasted with the simplicity that sets me apart from others. I am very proud of my pet portraits and I know it’s because it’s where my love of animals and art meet.
How do you think about happiness?
Oh, there are so many things that make me happy! Here are a few; Barton Springs, working on art with friends and strangers, swimming, being in nature, spending time with my loved ones, and silly animals. All these things make me happy because they inspire me to capture moments, which is a conduit to inspiration, and fuel for my art.
