Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Gorman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Taylor, and I am a touring musician, podcaster, and content creator in Austin, Texas.
I started my first business in the cannabis industry in Portland, Oregon in 2016 and since then have pivoted to the creative field. At the cannabis business, I was in charge of sales, distribution & marketing, driving products around the state and selling to shops as well as creating the brand and running the social media accounts. This is where my passion for content creation and photography began to “bloom.”
In fall of 2017, the first large-scale outdoor crop came into the marketplace and brought prices down for indoor growers like ourselves. This caused a lot of businesses to close their doors due to the bottom line not being met and after struggling for another year and a half or so, we eventually succumb to that same fate. As our business was closing, I pivoted to my creative work providing photo and video content services to local breweries and other businesses along with my new business partner who is a professional graphic designer. Together our new business was bringing in more income for us both than the cannabis farm ever did. Eventually, this became my passion project and something that I realized I was naturally good at. Since then I have made my love for photography and creative work as my full-time gig.
In 2021 I traveled the country more than ever before, visiting Austin 6-7 times in one year. On top of business, in general, slowing down in Portland due to the pandemic, with no clear revival in sight, It was clear to me that I needed to relocate when I realized that every time I would hit the tarmac at the PDX airport I would be filled with a deep sadness and lack of creative inspiration. Every day I would wake up missing Austin, daydreaming about what it would be like to be surrounded by other level-headed, creative individuals in a place with 300+ days of sunlight, great food, and a booming business landscape. I knew that it was time for me to relocate and eventually that dream became a reality as of July 4th of 2022.
Since moving to Austin, I have been able to secure photo/video gigs and works with two of the top 5 barbecue restaurants in the Texas Monthly top 50, as well as build the foundation for a strong network in the creative & music industry spaces. My music career continues to thrive and we will be touring the country this fall starting off with a few Texas dates. My podcast continues to grow now that I have access to so many unique and talented individuals to talk with. I can truly say that moving here has pulled me from my darkest depths of creative fatigue & lack of inspiration, and it’s hard to believe that we’re just getting started.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The journey has definitely not been smooth but it has been rewarding. I think a lot of freelancers and people with an entrepreneurial mindset
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the vocalist of a touring metal band called “BYSTANDER,” I am a professional photographer/videographer, and I have a podcast called the “GORECAST” where I explore all the things that I’m interested in through conversation. I also co-founded a boutique full-service creative agency in Austin called A+T Creative with my partner.
One thing I’ve been told sets me apart from others is that I don’t subscribe to the notion that you have to pick one thing and just focus on being good at that. All throughout school, when I was young, my teachers would tell my parents that I excelled far beyond expectation at things I was interested in and did terribly at things that I lacked interest in. As I grew older I think I ended up creating my lifestyle around the idea that generally speaking, you shouldn’t force your interest in things and you can excel & be successful at anything you are truly passionate about. Even when things have gotten tough for me financially, I just keep trying “live the dream” in a literal sense by doing things I’m interested into the fullest and finding new ways to create financial freedom for myself.
