Daily Inspiration: Meet Mark Wonderlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Wonderlin.

Hi Mark, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a Chicago native, I went to Eastern Illinois University and majored in corporate communications with an advertising minor. That helped land me a job with a company called, “Schutt Sports.” At Schutt, I got great exposure and experience in a variety of creative roles – photography, print design, website design, SEO, social media, print ads, video, packaging design, and pretty much anything else you can think of in the world of marketing.

I moved to Austin in 2016 with the vision of opening my own video company and taking my passion for creativity coupled with my knowledge of sales & marketing.

I was able to take my passion for creativity, as well as my knowledge of sales & marketing and create a production company that has grown significantly over the years and offers artistry with a marketing approach that I’m really proud of.

The name “Mosaic” came from the idea that a video when done well has all these different elements that come together (footage, music, sound design, graphics, interviews) to make something beautiful, just like a Mosaic.

Since 2014, I’ve had the opportunity to travel to 6 countries in Asia, Canada, South America, and Central America, and got to hang out with Richard Branson in Africa & Nectar island. All the while being able to help an array of businesses and brands throughout Austin & Texas.

For the past few years, I’ve built an incredible team of creatives who have helped me take the company to the next level in quality and the number of clients we can help.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a freelancer for years, I was ‘THE GUY” who did everything from the initial sale to final completion. As I grew the team and the number of projects, it was becoming increasingly difficult to make sure that everyone was in the loop with the progress of the project and the next steps.

So to solve this, I developed a custom software called “Mosaic SYNC” it’s specialized project management software that helps us create projects, iron-out logistics, and keeps our clients & team in the loop with the status of the project with helpful videos, tips and automatic email reminders to everyone every step of the way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The biggest thing is we have a focus on the marketing intent, rather than just filming random shots and asking random questions. We have a systematic approach to creating video taht is both compelling to watch and is designed to connect with the viewer on a deeper level.

I often tell my team, that in order to create a great video you need to fall in love with our customer’s customer because that is who we’re really making the video for.

We really have to understand their pain, feelings, and where they want to be in life. By doing that we can really create a story that resonates with them and illustrates how the client’s product or service can help them. We do this by using our 9-part story framework – that’s designed to engage, educate, and convert.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
When I first started, I was able to save a little money, instead of buying the next fancy piece of gear, I started testing out different marketing strategies. I learned pretty quickly that a lot of B2B marketers also double as professional scam artists – LOL.

All of them have these great pitches on how 97% of people they work with have a 2-3X increase in sales within the first 30 days, that “we have a custom message that helps with scale and personalization.” And “INSERT PERFECT SALE PITCH LINE HERE” things they would say.

I was optimistic based on the pitch and their “so-called” successful track record with other companies, only to spend tens of thousands of dollars getting ZERO sales opportunities.

Maybe it was the wrong strategy, or maybe it was the wrong company, however, there were several marketing ventures that just didn’t work well.
