Conversations with Josh Wiseman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Wiseman.

Hi Josh, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Oh goodness, where to start…I left college to go overseas to play basketball and ended up tearing my knee after a couple of years and when I came back to the states, I attempted to go back to school but was forced to drop out for family reasons. At that point, my entrepreneurial endeavors began. Who knew that decision would change my life forever? I dabbled as a full-time music artist and cut a couple of albums, launched a couple of clothing brands, and while those things were in full swing, I always had a camera around to document the journey. I began getting approached by people asking if I could things like family portraits and small business marketing content and I thought to myself “Sheesh, there might really be something here.” So I took the leap and went full-time into photo and video, and shortly after, moved to Austin to pursue this new life, new passion, and an ever-growing desire to tell people’s stories. Now, nearly a decade later, I’ve traveled all around the world, met some incredible people with incredible stories, helped businesses flourish, and have absolutely overflowed my cup with joy for the lives that I’m impacting and the voices that I’m showcasing to be heard.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh, I think any entrepreneur would agree with me in saying that the road, is for sure the road less traveled, and it’s definitely not paved lol I definitely have some stories of struggles and to name a few…I went on tour with a band in my first year full-time and subleased my apartment. BIG MISTAKE. The renters ended up turning it into a trap house and I got evicted when I was on the road and had to have my friends clear out what was left in order to salvage my belongings. When I got back that Segways into the next big struggle when I was technically homeless and was living out of a storage unit as well as sleeping in a 10×12 office inside of a gym, stealing meals from the community fridge if people didn’t label them and basically working out 2-3 times a day. I mean, I was shredded as f*ck but was it the most healthy lifestyle? Absolutely not lol

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a professional videographer and photographer, I’ve shot all sorts of things in basically every industry you can think of. But what I would like to consider my specialties are Lifestyle, branding, and travel content. I got my start in the creative world in the fitness industry so that’ll always be my bread and butter but I’d like to think I’m known for my storytelling abilities and how to create narrative-driven visuals to help keep peoples attention. I think I’m probably most proud of being able to sustain a career in a very saturated field all by myself with no team or other people to delegate the responsibility to. I could list some accolades but I really don’t care about that stuff. Aside from that last statement setting me apart from other people in the industry, I think my personality and providing an “experience” while shooting with me sets me apart. I also care a lot about men’s mental health so having that as a facet of my life that I openly speak on is very important to me and feel as if that sets me apart tremendously. A couple of years ago I wrote a book about it that was top 50 in the world so that was probably one of my most proud moments to put something so vulnerable out there.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like the diversity of Austin, the food scene, as well as its being an international hub for flights, however, the extreme amount of growth over the last 8 years or so has made the city like a small LA in regards to how people act, how cliquish communities can be, and a lot of the things that kept Austin “weird” are now being dozed and built over.
