

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Johnson.
Hi Chris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After practicing pharmacy for 9 years in over 80 different pharmacies across multiple disciplines, I realized that uninsured patients get a raw deal regarding prescription pricing. This is almost exclusively a product of the complex contracts pharmacies sign with private benefit managers (a.k.a. insurance companies). I thought: why should an insurance company have anything to do with what an UNinsured patient pays for their medicine? Well, that’s how MedSavers was born. I decided to sign no insurance contracts and price medications fairly for uninsured and underinsured patients. We have helped thousands of patients across Texas, Arizona, Florida, Ohio, and Colorado. I had a simple mission: make medications affordable.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
The 18-year road has been smooth but certainly not perfect. We had to address $4.00 prescription lists, Medicare Part D, The Affordable Care Act, and Covid-19. All the while, we stayed agile as a business and could adjust and pivot as needed. We added compounding and wellness supplements around 8 years ago to help offset the challenges and continue to help as many as possible.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My willingness to spend lots of time with patients sets me apart from others in my field. I enjoy talking to people and making them feel comfortable and cared for as they navigate various illnesses and ailments. I believe that I put patients at ease and create a comfortability that allows for dialogue that is rarely present in the pharmacy setting. Though we are a full-service compounding pharmacy, I also specialize in CBD therapy. I help people navigate problems with sleep, pain, anxiety, depression, and much more. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than identifying a problem and assisting a client in solving that problem. My career has been super satisfying since starting MedSavers in 2005.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
I talk with an architect friend of mine quite often about this. We both agree that what would stress those wishing to start their own business is the fact that it is all-consuming. Sure, you work the hours during the day. You also have it on your mind at almost all hours of every day. It’s okay – it can be difficult for those around you to fully appreciate the amount of ‘brain time’ that goes into such a business.
