Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Snyder.
Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from California originally, living in both Northern and Southern California. I had always been creative but put it off when I went to college. After graduating from San Francisco State with a degree in Sociology, and decided to move to New York City to pursue art. While in New York, I honed my collage skills and made a body of work ranging from gallery pieces to zines to even curating a couple of art shows at galleries in Brooklyn. In June 2020, I moved to Austin and started selling prints, stickers, postcards, and zines at the local Austin farmers market. From there, my business was born, and I sell my art all over the city at different artisan markets and online on my website.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My path has been long and winding. It took me a long time to figure out where I fit in the art world. And I only found what I love most, selling directly to customers when I moved to Austin in June 0f 2020. Before that, it was 6 years of making art, but I needed to figure out where it fits or how to get it into the world. Collage is not a super common medium. It doesn’t hold the same status as more traditional mediums, so my biggest challenge was overcoming my doubts about being taken seriously as a collage artist.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make collage art by hand, using a mix of my photos, magazine cutouts, newspaper cutouts, and gold leaf. My process is based on feeling and wanting my viewers to react emotionally to my work. I’ve created a body of work full of nostalgia, inspiration, and beauty. My work is surreal and contemporary. I’m most proud that I’ve developed a unique voice true to me and my taste.
Before we go, can you talk to us about how people can work, collaborate, or support you?
People can find me online at marysnyderartist.com or artisan markets around Austin. I’m usually vending with Austin Flea or SoCo Makers Market!
