Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Lord. They and their team shared their story with us below:
The band’s first Iteration was formed in 2019, when guitarist Aidan Sweeney, Drummer Alex Wilhelm, and Bassist Will Lord were in college together at southwestern university. Back then, the band was called Sweet Maple street and featured several other members, most of whom departed the group as college wore in. This included Alex, who went on to pursue a Masters at NYU. After several other drummers and a few singers rotated in and out of the band, Alex was eventually reunited with the group alongside a new singer named Greyson Turner. The new lineup of Lord on Bass, Sweeney on lead guitar, Wilhelm on drums, and Turner on lead vocals and rhythm guitar proved to be a winning combination, and the band re-dubbed itself American Megafauna (USMF). We then recorded 6 singles that year, which will all be released in 2023.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Going through so many lineup changes proved difficult. We had issues with previous members not taking the project seriously and personal conflicts with various ex-members. But upon arriving at our current lineup, personal tensions within the band relaxed, and the chemistry has never been better. Additionally, making progress as a band is never easy; gigs can be hard to come by, and the process of writing and recording is involved, but in the end, it’s worth every bit of effort.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our music blends the energy of punk rock and the varied color palette of psychedelia with the danceability of funk and old-school rock and roll. We’re known for our complex yet memorable compositions that take the listener on a whole journey within a few minutes and our tight live performances.
How would we have described you growing up if we knew you were growing up?
We come from varied backgrounds. Alex Wilhelm has been a professional musician in Austin since he was a teenager; before that, he was a martial artist. Greyson Turner also sang, acted, and modeled from a young age in his home state of South Carolina, even appearing on American Idol’s final round of auditions. Aidan Sweeney grew up in rural comfort Texas where he pursued competitive athletics in football and track. Will Lord grow up in sugar land, TX, where he spent his day running long-distance through his cross-country team and reading in his spare time?
