Hi Moriah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Shortly after Covid hit in 2020, I decided to leave my career in banking, and I had yet to decide what I would do work-wise as I had been in banking for almost 9 years. One day scrolling through TikTok, I saw a post about Self-Defense keychains and items, and I took an interest in it, being that I am on my majority of the time. So I decided why not and went all in. I found a wholesale website and purchased a bulk order of tasers, paper sprays, wristlets, charms, business cards, and eye-catching packaging. I built my Shopify website and started Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok accounts to promote. Having a couple of videos reach over 1 million views was amazing! The products I sell are strictly for safety and would be useful to any woman on any given day. Our products are also great for trail walkers, hikers, and runners!
Secondly, within the past 3 weeks, I recently opened my new dream business! I am a dog mom to a French Bulldog named Spencer, and “we” opened an Etsy shop called Frenchie Essentials. French Bulldogs are currently the most popular dog in the world, and I decided to set up a print shop to share the love! This store will be stocked with various items designed with super cute French Bulldog graphics. I have partnered with a printing company, Printify, which handles my stocking, printing, and shipping. All these products are made to reduce overstocking in my home business area. I make and create product designs, and Printify handles the rest. These products are perfect for French bulldog families, Frenchie moms, breeders, and any French bulldog lover!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Unfortunately, it is tough for me to market outside of social media posts in the self-defense business. I have attempted to run paid apps through every channel I come across, and each ad gets denied for “promoting the use of weapons.” The few videos that hit over 1 million views were just by chance because I am not social media savvy. Using hashtags to bring in traffic is so hard for me to hack. Frenchie Essentials is just waiting to be seen. I have done all the SEO work on my Etsy listings. However, numerous people are already on the market with these products. I have been trying to list ‘low competition’ products with a high search ranking.

Our products will be made on demand instead of printing in bulk to help reduce overproduction. As the business owner, I create all the product designs, and orders are currently handled through our production partner, Printify.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My most explicit memory is when I was about 7-8 years old; my dad took me to the lake dam to catch butterflies. The area used to be wide open; we would go out with jars in hand to catch and release. When butterflies fly around me, it always takes me back to that moment.
