Exploring Life & Business with Shelby Perkins of Good Foundation Fredericksburg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Perkins.

Hi Shelby, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I was led to yoga through basketball in high school, where my mat quickly became my home as I moved through life’s changes. In March 2014, I completed her 200hr yoga teacher training and started leading classes. I believe that time spent on your mat is an opportunity to connect your body and mind, creating a space to listen to and respect each aspect of you. My classes are designed for you to build a personal connection to yourself, with suggestions on how to move in your body safely. You can expect to leave feeling balanced by strengthening asanas throughout the class- this feeling will ripple effect on the life that happens off of your mat.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth paths are a matter of perspective. There are always challenges in life; everything is different from what you imagine it to be. However, if you let things unfold naturally, it is common to see that things are way better than you could have imagined. The hardest part of letting things unfold is letting go of your ego and pride. I want to do my best at everything I put energy into, which can be hard when things feel difficult. My biggest lesson is that there is a difference between a challenge and being told “no.” I strive to be challenged and in constant growth, giving energy to those places while moving on from anything that is forced or inauthentic.

As you know, we’re big fans of Good Foundation Fredericksburg. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
Good Foundation Fredericksburg is a coffee shop, and yoga studio focused on building community within yourself and with your neighbors. Highlighting the uniqueness that we all have and the parts we play in the world is what sets us apart from other places. When you are here, you are known, accepted, and belong. Everything is done with intention so that when you leave, you feel better than when you walked in with coffee brewed to perfection, a menu designed to make you feel good, a class that features your favorite poses, or a laugh with a new friend.

What are your plans for the future?
I am leading a yoga teacher training to bring more teachers to the community in my space and the town. The more teachers we have, the more unique offerings the space can provide.
