Today we’d like to introduce you to Dagne Gorham.
Hi Dagne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! My name is Dagne Gorham, and I’m a double Taurus (sun and moon), born and raised in a small town in Minnesota, about an hour north of Minneapolis. From a young age, I loved music; I grew up with my dad having weekly band practices in our basement. He also had a home recording studio down there, so often as a kid, I’d go in and mime singing into the microphones, look at the guitars, and resist the urge to squish the sound paneling on the walls. That, combined with my mom playing Pavement, Liz Phair, and Beck in the car in the mid/late 90s and me seeing the 2000s movies “The Cheetah Girls,” “Josie and The Pussycats,” and “School of Rock,” I grew up to want to be a singer and guitarist for my kid dream to come true!
Over the years, I took piano lessons, taught myself to play guitar (I didn’t want my dad to help me – I tried to approach it my way), and later studied piano and audio engineering in various colleges. However, I ended up not getting a degree in music because studying it so intensely kind of started to kill the joy in it for me.
Cut to now, in which I still approach my guitar playing very intuitively, and I like to keep myself open to experimentation and fun in my music! I love watching different films to inspire my music and enjoy learning about other musicians and how they approach their work. I also often find myself inspired by actors and their approaches to their work! I’m a true DIY girl, and I love the exploration of being involved in every step of my creative process; it can be a lot sometimes, but I love the freedom in that!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Ultimately, yes, it’s been a smooth road! I’ve been blessed and privileged to have my parents support my musical dreams by paying for lessons, college, and other things. I’m grateful for them and for that! My biggest struggles were internal, however – not believing in myself or my perspective. I operated for a long time – until my album came out last fall – from a place of not loving or trusting my vulnerability, sensitivity, and vision. I grew up feeling I was ‘weak’ or ‘weird’ and thus quieted myself down and had this hyper-independence throughout all levels of school to try and steel myself against what I was thinking was ‘something wrong with me.’ However, through time and age, as well as finding musicians and actors who represented strength in their vulnerability to me, I’ve also grown to find beauty, power, and love in myself and how I create things, sing, and play guitar! I needed to learn that we’re all unique and perfect just as we are, that there’s no need to try and change yourself or fit in when you are meant to be you and only you! It’s cliché, maybe, but I do think it’s true?
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I play guitar, sing, and create and release my music. I also create my videos and other visual content. I specialize in long-form, experimental, looping journeys of guitar and voice; I love to paint with sound and create music that’s like a movie in your imagination! I’m most proud of how I’ve been able to be honest with myself and honest with the listener/viewer of my work. I’ve learned to follow my heart and follow the joy of pure inspiration and fun in the ideas that come to me!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can work or collaborate with me by emailing my music email or DM-ing me on social media! I’m always open to hearing about different project ideas, whatever medium! People can support me by streaming my music, watching my YouTube videos, following me on social media, and booking me for shows/performances/sessions!
