Today we’d like to introduce you to Emeril Lester.
Hi Emeril, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’m Emeril Lester, and as an indie filmmaker, I create short Christian films to inspire others about Jesus Christ by showing the importance of the relationship with Christ through an unconventional medium. I started filmmaking a little over a year ago with my iPhone, but now I’ve upgraded to the Panasonic G7! Although it is not a film camera, I am grateful to proclaim that all things are possible with God and the vision He’s made!
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been anything but a smooth road in this field, especially as a Christian filmmaker. One of the most challenging things I’ve endured is filming alone. If you are still getting familiar with this field, it requires multiple hands and can be challenging to complete films independently. I am so grateful to have my support system (my wife and good friends) to help me accomplish my work!
Another challenge is portraying the Word in the film without appearing as a preacher. Although I aim to share the Good Word, I also believe in providing a safe space for those curious about Jesus Christ to gather without fearing judgment or ostracizing those not as well-versed in the Word.
I’ve also struggled with managing the time to be a one-person band. Working a 9-5 full-time job to turn around and pursue filmmaking full-time can be challenging. Putting in extra hours on a dream seems like a lost cause at times, but it’s all on God’s timing, so I will continue to work hard for the greater purpose. As I strive to be a full-time filmmaker, I will keep God first and prioritize him over my struggles. He has plans for all of us; we have to trust his timing!
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create short films through social media to share the word of God in an accessible manner. I’m a self-taught filmmaker, and I specialize in cinematography and videography. I have gained a supportive community on social media platforms where my loving followers know me as “the Christian filmmaker.” I’m very grateful to God for allowing me to make films and share my gifts with the world! I have recently been selected for the Austin Spotlight Film Festival for a film shot on my iPhone, and I would consider this project to be what I’m most proud of. I believe my passion and dedication to sharing God’s Word sets me apart. You may stumble across other filmmakers but rarely find any specifically Christian filmmakers. I’m sure I’m not the only creator in this field, but I hope to motivate and encourage others to strive for their dreams, even if they seem all alone.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I see myself directing and shooting featured films and movies for Christians and all!
