Today we’d like to introduce you to Icy Monroe.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
As a musician, I’ve been singing most of my life but only got serious about music halfway through high school. I then learned to read music and began competing more, which slated the path for my collegiate studies in music. While in Graduate school, I learned that I had an injury on my vocal folds due to stress, and it led me on a journey to healing holistically and tweaking my vocal technique along with how I teach. This paved the road for my business, The Voice Clinic, where I take a completely different approach to the voice that has proven to be as therapeutic as it is informational.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth at all! I opened my first location off of Rosewood in 2015. Due to low demand for such a “niche” market, I closed a year later. While teaching out of my home and at schools, the pandemic hit, and I lost 99% of my work. As a single mother, it was hard to look at my kids and wonder how they would eat, so I reinvented myself and The Voice Clinic’s brand. Now, the demand for what I do has taken off as more people recognize the type of work I do with the voice. I have the privilege to breathe life into singers of all levels, and I’m truly grateful.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to be more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a musician and voice teacher by day and night! My main trade is opera, but I started singing pop and gospel. I sing most genres and perform at gigs in most genres as well. My latest/largest gigs include being a soprano soloist for Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and turning around to sing backup for Michael Bublé’s recent performance in Austin. I own The Voice Clinic in Austin, specializing in preventative vocal technique. My holistic approach allows singers of all levels to experience healing beyond the voice, and I’m grateful for every day that I can do what I love!
