Inspiring Conversations with Franki Spell of Phoenix Strong ATX & Phoenix Pottery ATX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Franki Spell.

Franki Spell

Hi Franki, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My fitness journey started on a consistent path in 2011, and you could say this is where my business journey also began. I realized then that I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives just as my trainer did so inspiringly for me. I became a trainer in 2012, and I started coaching boot camps and doing some one-on-one training. In 2013, I got a CrossFit Level 1 Coaching certification and began coaching while becoming a competitive athlete. I think the drive to be a great athlete transcends the gym and blends into daily life. I felt my drive and ambition were effortlessly given to my clients, and it is that way even today. After a couple of years, I realized that my strength was strength, and I became a competitive powerlifter. I excelled quickly and earned some Texas state, National, and world records while competing. I started some women’s powerlifting groups at the gym I managed. I came to a point where I knew it was time to start my own thing and build my own business. I opened a gym in June 2017 after saving up and training clients in my garage for 8 months. I still own the gym and still have most of the same clients that began with me. People tell me my story inspires them, but the truth is my clients inspire me every day, and its honestly what keeps me going with drive and passion. Not only do I own a gym, but I am an artist to the core. I own a successful pottery business making custom dinnerware for local restaurants and stores. I feel fortunate to spend my days doing the things that I love and get paid for it!

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t know anyone who has had a smooth road as an entrepreneur. But I know most will tell you the road was worth it. My biggest struggles live within me. The more I do inner work, take care of my mental and physical health, and actively work on skills, the more the road shows me what’s in front of me. It’s usually filled with beautiful things, people, and lessons. I’m grateful for everything, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Phoenix Strong ATX & Phoenix Pottery ATX?

  • Phoenix Strong: This is my gym. I offer one-on-one training and small group classes. I customize a hybrid, well-balanced training program for all fitness levels.
  • Phoenix Pottery: This is my art business. I make modern, unique custom dinnerware, home goods, and sculptures. My color palette is neutral yet powerful. There is restraint in my approach to design and build.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Learning how to communicate with clients effectively has been the biggest lesson and the most rewarding part of my journey. I am a good listener with a good amount of empathy and compassion. I am loyal and loving with people, and people appreciate that above all else.
