Daily Inspiration: Meet Erika Schuster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Schuster.

Erika Schuster

Hi Erika, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always liked to cook and bake. In school, I also always knew I wanted to own my own business someday, so I got my bachelor’s in a related field. When I was 21, I wanted to make my sister a cake for her 30 birthday. I went to the local party store and grabbed all the cake-decorating items. I made what I thought was a great cake then, lol. I got so many compliments I decided to keep going, mostly making cakes for friends and family. My portfolio landed me a cake decorator job at a local bakery. After 3 years there, my husband and I took over the business and named it Sooo Yummy Bakery. After running the shop for a year, we realized things were not going well, and we were pregnant with our first daughter. We decided to close the shop, but I did not stop baking. Over the next five years, I grew my reputation for making great cakes in the hill country area while baking from home and raising my babies. I opened our current shop at 222 S. Main Street in Burnet, TX, in April 2021! We have quickly outgrown the 504-square-foot space and are ready for what’s next!

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running a business is a struggle. There are just so many different areas to keep balanced in the bakery. I have to be the CEO and focus on marketing, finances, payroll, and taxes while making most of our products, washing the dishes, and taking out the trash! It takes a lot of work to do it all simultaneously. Also, being a mom of 3 makes it much more complicated because I still have been present in my children’s lives.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to be more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist at heart. Before getting into cake decorating, my hobbies were sketching and drawing. I have always loved drawing, painting, and creating! I am happy to have found a way still to express this side of myself in my work! I am most proud of the cakes that I was able to design myself. Most people have a specific vision for their cakes and want me to execute that, but I like to bring my vision to life occasionally. My ability to do excellent clean work on cakes and use my canvas appealingly sets me apart.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in New Orleans, LA, and only moved to Austin when I was 17. I was the type of person who was a good friend. I had a mostly normal childhood.
