Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Baker.
Hi Melissa, can you introduce yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The Jane of All Trades started when she was 12, selling L’paige Lipstick at a 10×10 booth at the Wisconsin State Fair, aka me. For the last 20 years, I have been in over 200 job roles in almost every industry, working within Sales, Marketing, Recruiting, HR, Accounting, etc. departments! I was a “Pitchman” by trade – you know, those silly people you see selling as seen on TV items on HSN or QVC. I have proudly sold over 100+ products to date.
I moved to Austin in 2012, pursuing my career in experiential marketing as a producer and tour manager for many large Fortune 500 brands, traveling the country 5x over for 5+ years and 40 weeks a year. Unfortunately, to my demise and silver lining with a medical condition – I moved into the mental health space, working for a nonprofit in their trauma division at a mental health hospital. It was from 2020-2024, and the shift occurred for me. Navigating a medical condition, I started my businesses – hence, the Jane of all trades came about!
I am a small business owner of multiple ventures and variety. “Jane” does business consulting, marketing strategies, staffing/recruiting, and HR reviews—reviewing company health and communications.
“Jane” runs a holistic, conscious cleaning business that provides sliding-scale services to the average human, the medically vulnerable, and low-income households. If your house is sick, you can be as well. We consult before we are holistically clean to meet your needs and ask for specifics on your home health and diagnosis.
“Jane” Created a natural, holistic, medical beeswax candle! Safe for allergy-sensitive households! The candles represent the melting pot America is today, with the names of each one representing a different country!
“Melissa” is writing a mental health poetry book to inspire real, deep love, care, and understanding—think William Shakespeare meets Brene Brown, the social worker! It’s the love letter you never sent.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, man, not at all—being a one-man band has its challenges! It needs capital, and doing one project to pay for another investment requires trial and Error, messing up, and learning as you go!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
I am a business muse and an artistic, poetic writer. I live within both. I specialize in many things – hence the jane of all trades. I have different and fresh perspectives without judgment on all that I touch. I am proud of myself for knowing all this is my legacy, and I’m changing and impacting 100s of people a week. I call myself the Mentor of Health “get it “or” health.” What sets me apart is all my formed practices, lived experiences, and unique experiences only I could have lived and been through. I am a teacher and educator by nature and a natural people lover. I am fascinated by the mind, and through my conversations and curiosity, I keep thriving and producing.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Can you share something that might surprise us?
I haven’t eaten out at a restaurant in over three years. I only cook or eat what I make at home. I don’t drink, do drugs, consume caffeine, or eat chocolate or candy. It’s a rare thing I share now, but people are impressed and shocked by it.
