Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Mayer.
Hi Katherine, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always knew I wanted to work in the field of criminal justice. After receiving an undergraduate degree in psychology and a certificate in behavioral forensics, I completed a graduate degree in Forensic Psychology. I chose an internship at the Capital Defender of Northern Virginia, where I learned about the role of a death penalty mitigation specialist, and the rest is history. I worked as a mitigation specialist with the Public Defender of Miami-Dade in their Capital Litigation Unit until I entered the private sector. In 2012, I founded Mayer Consulting, moved it to Austin, Texas, in 2013, and today, we’re an all-female firm that conducts fact investigation through sentencing.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
All business owners have struggled at some point. The imposter syndrome alone is a struggle. It’s easier to start and run a company with someone else to bounce ideas off of, especially in such a niche field. It’s not like my mom had any helpful advice in that arena! As I grew the company, there were constantly growing pains – figuring out policies and procedures, onboarding new employees, etc. I don’t have a business degree, so everything was trial and error.

Mayer Consulting is a holistic criminal defense consulting firm. We can conduct all types of investigation, from the guilt/innocence phase through sentencing. We’re a one-stop shop for criminal defense attorneys to assist in cases where their clients face serious criminal charges. What sets us apart is that we are an all-female firm, and none of us come from law enforcement. Private investigation is a male-dominated field where many retired law enforcement end up.
