Meet Sabrina Anderson of Round Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Anderson.

Sabrina Anderson

Hi, Sabrina; we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always wanted to help others. I was a PAL (Peer Assistance and Leadership) during high school, where I mentored kids in elementary and middle school. After I graduated from UT Austin, I decided to get alternatively certified in education to teach Spanish. I was a teacher for 15 years, with a short stint as an Academic Director of a tutoring company during my transition back to the Austin area. As a teacher, I felt connected to my students but wanted to connect on a deeper level, so I pursued a degree in Counseling and Development from Lamar University. I became a school counselor in 2018, and after the pandemic hit, I knew I had a greater calling to work with individuals one-on-one. I took the required courses to become a Licensed Professional Counselor, and in July 2023, I opened my practice, Birdjoy Therapy PLLC.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey hasn’t always been linear, but I have consistently grown every step of the way. I worked as an educator for 20 years, which had ups and downs, but also gave me the foundation to become a therapist. Some of the biggest challenges I’ve had were with familial relationships, so I can easily relate to my clients going through similar struggles. This is one of the reasons I focus on relationship work in my therapy practice because personal experience can be just as valuable as a degree hanging on the wall. I feel when struggles in my personal or professional life come up, I persevere with grit and determination to get to the other side.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My specialty is relationship therapy through an attachment lens. This means we are wired to connect with others, and if someone struggles in their relationships, it will likely impact other areas of their life. Most of my clients reach out because they have anxiety, stress, life changes, or other issues that are often related to a lack of relational connection. I love a couple of therapeutic modalities: Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); however, I view myself as an eclectic therapist, tailoring my approach to each individual’s needs. My ability to be deeply attuned to my clients sets me apart from other therapists. In session, I truly listen and help my clients uncover what they are struggling with while providing tools to live a rich, fulfilling life.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on my journey is to listen to my intuition. I was insecure and didn’t always trust myself when I was younger. I have learned that being vulnerable leads to growth, and it can be scary to vocalize your needs, hopes, or dreams. When working with my clients, I encourage them to foster self-trust and listen to their intuition, so I must practice what I preach!
