Inspiring Conversations with Jared Carrillo of Constellation Music Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Carrillo

Hi Jared, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From selling merch and making memes for a friend’s band in 2022 to negotiating label contracts and distribution deals for 5 bands under my own company (Constellation Music Group) in 2024, my artist management journey has unexpectedly brought my life full circle.

I was exposed to music at an early age through the church. My grandfather was in a band called Gospel Action in the 80s and has led the praise and worship team as a pastor my entire life. Multiple family members were also involved in bands and the praise and worship team, which inspired me to learn multiple instruments and developed my ear early on.

In grade school to college, I continued to play music when I could but eventually began a career in sales in 2018. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I had to find my way back to the music, some way, somehow. I experienced multiple failed attempts at joining the music industry from 2018-2021, from being a stagehand to street teams to even trying out for bands as a musician.

In 2022, I offered to sell merch for an old college friend’s band Denim Haircut to get into shows for free. The following day they jokingly said I could be their manager if I booked them a few shows and I had this moment of epiphany. “This was my chance”. The following years were filled with countless hours of hard work, more failures, and learning about the music industry to the best of my ability. As of June 2024, I have my own company with an incredibly talented roster of 5 bands: Rococo Disco, Kairos, Deniz Love, Tarry and the Towns, and Denim Haircut. I’m extremely grateful for the trust and grace my current clients have given me, because of them I found my way back to music as a career.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting out my biggest struggle was battling imposter syndrome, I didn’t know what I was doing. The only thing I knew was from reading “All You Need To Know About The Music Industry” and even that taught me next to nothing about the day-to-day of being a manager. In the beginning, I was making memes and content and selling merch. To overcome this I was trying to do too much: Running social media accounts, photography at shows, designing show flyers, filming and directing music videos, etc. My time and priorities were all misplaced and I was spreading myself too thin. Today, I know to focus on the core of my business, which is artist development, music distribution, and strategic booking, which was also learned through trial and error.

The next challenge was to establish and maintain credibility in the hyper-competitive scene of Austin, Texas.
In the early days, we were playing to nobody and that doubt and imposter syndrome started to creep back in. As a manager, you feel responsible for the trajectory of your artist’s career so you feel the weight of every decision. Through time, a ton of shows, and relationship building, we’re now playing the biggest venues in Texas for the biggest event companies like Resound, Spune, and Third String Entertainment.

We still have a long way to go and big dreams to accomplish, so I’m sure we will have more struggles to share in the future.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
