Today we’d like to introduce you to Demi Romero
Hi demi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all began with a dream. As a young girl, I felt a deep calling toward music, though the path was unclear. As I grew older, my commitment to realizing this dream only strengthened. In 2017, I relocated from my hometown of San Antonio to Austin, driven by the desire to immerse myself in a vibrant music scene. Within just a year of exploring the city, making new friends, and soaking in live performances nightly, I found myself drawn to a local gem on E 7th St. — Scratchouse.
This venue, with its weekly Open Mic Night, became my sanctuary. It was an evening filled with remarkable local talent, each artist pouring their heart into their music. Inspired by their passion and determination, I realized that I, too, could carve out my own space in the world of music. I believed that if I followed my heart, I could become a DJ, infusing my unique sound and song selections into the mix.
The moment I purchased my first DJ controller, I was captivated. I began crafting mixes and curating playlists, eager to share my musical vision with the world. I uploaded my first mix to SoundCloud, and to my delight, it garnered over 71,000 streams. Since then, I’ve released numerous mixes spanning various genres and playlists, each reflecting my evolving journey in music.
The name “Yung Mijita” comes from my grandmother who always called me that name growing up. Mijita became my second name around her.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. I’ve had the privilege of performing alongside some of my favorite artists, including Tommy Wright III, Lil Ugly Mane, LaGoony Chonga, DJ Paul, and many more. My craft has allowed me to travel and experience new places, far beyond what I once imagined. Each step of this journey reaffirms my belief that dreams can become reality with passion and perseverance.
I am profoundly thankful for the path I’m on and the incredible experiences it continues to bring.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has certainly been anything but smooth. While the road has been filled with incredible experiences and opportunities, it has also presented its fair share of challenges.
When I first started, I faced a steep learning curve. Navigating the complexities of DJing, from mastering the technical aspects of the equipment to understanding how to read a crowd and craft the perfect mix, was no easy feat. There were countless nights of self-doubt and frustration as I tried to perfect my craft and find my unique voice in a crowded field.
Additionally, moving to a new city and establishing myself in the vibrant Austin music scene came with its own set of challenges. Building connections and gaining recognition in a new environment required perseverance and resilience. There were times when gigs were scarce, and the pressure to stand out was immense.
Despite these hurdles, each challenge has been a valuable lesson. They have strengthened my resolve and deepened my appreciation for the journey. The struggles have made the successes all the more rewarding and have taught me that perseverance, adaptability, and self-belief are crucial to overcoming obstacles.
In reflection, the road may not have always been smooth, but every bump and detour has contributed to the richness of my experience and the joy I find in pursuing my passion.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am still a student, studying Graphic Design along with Liberal Studies. There are so many things I still have yet to accomplish, but I’m excited to learn more and see what’s in store for me. So far I have designed graphics, flyers, logos, and merch design for friends and local residents to help jump start their business or creative marketing strategies. I’m mostly known for my outgoing personality, my DJ performances, along with my authenticity.
I’m deeply passionate about curating and sharing music through DJing. My work revolves around creating dynamic and immersive experiences for my audience. I specialize in crafting mixes that blend various genres, reflecting both current trends and timeless classics. My aim is to create a unique atmosphere that resonates with each listener, offering them a memorable auditory journey.
I am most proud of the way my music has connected with people. Seeing my mixes gain traction on platforms like SoundCloud and having the opportunity to perform alongside some of my favorite artists are achievements that I hold dear. These milestones validate my dedication and passion for my craft.
Ultimately, what distinguishes my work is the genuine love I have for music and the creativity I bring to each performance. It’s not just about playing tracks; it’s about crafting a sonic experience that leaves a lasting impression.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my fondest childhood memories is the time spent traveling with my parents and siblings. Our family vacations were always filled with excitement and discovery as we explored new places together. These trips were not just about seeing new sights but also about cherishing quality time with each other. I particularly treasure the moments spent with my grandma, as well as the joy of attending family events with my close uncle and aunts. These experiences were rich with laughter, bonding, and the creation of cherished memories that have stayed with me throughout my life.
