Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Matimba.
Hi Becca, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi yes, I’m Becca Matimba a storyteller, photographer and actor. I’m 1st generation African American, where both my parents originate from Zimbabwe and my dad moved to the states in the 70s as an immigrant turned citizen and after he married my mom and came along and became a citizen in the late 80s. I’ve always had a heart and eye for creativity and performing. I started singing, dancing and acting when I was 3 years old. Then I wrote my top 3 dreams when I was 9 years old and began seriously pursuing photography my senior year of high school in 2011 and then launch my business, Becca Matimba Photography in January of 2017. I have specialized in portraits, editorials, weddings and it allows me to flex my creative director muscle meanwhile I’m still chasing my main passion: acting. There’s a whole other side to my journey but I currently reside in Austin, TX and plan on someday being the best director, writer, actor.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all, when you take a risk and go against parental and societal pressures, it’s lonely at times. Typically, the main struggles is consistent income, working multiple jobs, networking a lot and watching the photography market become so saturated and kitsch. I really want my photos to feel like cinema ~ moody and natural. I love chasing a good beautiful and true story whether it be a couple, family, or individual project. The biggest hurdle is simply not knowing is this all for nothing?
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m primarily a professional photographer. I specialize in editorial/weddings/elopements/portraits/and families. Definitely known for my natural editorial and moody tones for a cinematic looking photograph. I’m most proud of my next project because I know I’m moving closer to what I love doing within photography. I think just the fact I am just being myself and inviting others into my creative world and understanding their world too that makes the entire process so worth it. I have established an ecosystem of people who love to chase the good, beautiful and true and that’s such a gift from God!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Putting others first and just doing the damn thing afraid or not.
