Today we’d like to introduce you to John Patterson.
John, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Photography has been a creative outlet for me ever since I took my first photography class as a college freshman. I was immediately drawn to the challenge of capturing unique perspectives and creating visually balanced compositions. Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, I bought my first professional camera. During that quiet, uncertain year, I spent countless hours honing my craft and developing my eye for storytelling through images.
What began as a hobby quickly became a meaningful part of my life and a way to express creativity and find balance amid everyday stress. In 2022, I started shooting professionally to help create marketing content for my current employer, which opened the door to many new opportunities. Since then, I’ve expanded into various areas of photography, including portraits, landscapes, real estate, and event work. Each project allows me to keep learning, exploring, and sharing the world as I see it through my lens.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many creatives, I’ve faced moments of self-doubt where I question my abilities and whether my work was “good enough.” That’s probably been my biggest challenge. There have also been difficult clients and projects that pushed me out of my comfort zone, but each experience has taught me something valuable. Over time, I’ve learned to trust my instincts, stay patient through the process, and view challenges as opportunities to grow and refine my craft.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Frame and Form Photography, I specialize in capturing architecture, interiors, and human connection. My work focuses on the relationship between structure, light, and atmosphere. I enjoy collaborating with individuals, families, designers, and brands to create images that elevate their stories and showcase their work in its best light.
What sets me apart is my eye for composition and balance, shaped by a genuine appreciation for design. I approach every project with a focus on detail, intentional framing, and the interplay between people and place. I’m most proud of turning everyday environments into thoughtful, artful narratives that reflect both the creativity of my clients and my own passion for storytelling through form and frame.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the photography industry continuing to evolve with technology. AI tools, social media, and digital marketing are changing the way images are created, shared, and consumed, which can feel scary. But at the same time, I think there will be a growing appreciation for authenticity and storytelling. People and brands want visuals that feel real, and images that connect emotionally.
For me, I plan to keep growing Frame and Form by taking on more individual and family sessions while also expanding in the architecture and design markets. My long-term goal is to transition fully into running my business full-time, dedicating myself to creating inspiring, high-quality imagery that helps people and brands tell their stories in a meaningful way.
