Check Out Lindsey Thorne’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Thorne.

Hi Lindsey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My father was a graphic designer, illustrator and photographer and taught me how to use his film cameras when I was 16. I instantly fell in love and never looked back. I received my BFA in photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design and initially thought I wanted to go into fashion photography. Once I moved to NYC after college, I began assisting a wedding photographer. I never knew that the connection the subjects have to the images would become so important to me, so fulfilling. I began focusing on weddings and boudoir and found purpose in documenting history and empowering women. I can’t imagine doing anything else!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I consider myself very fortunate to have found purpose in my career early on. What I’ve struggled with the most is the intense personal connection I have to what I do. The hardest struggle was when my dad passed. Documenting father daughter dances and hyping up my clients while grieving pushed me into a vulnerable, emotionally draining space. And while I found it to be challenging, I also gained an entirely new perspective. I’ve had many clients come to me over the years with requests for images of family members who passed after the wedding, that the images from the wedding are the last images they have of them, but it never quite hit home until I went through it myself. Now I go into every wedding with the intention to provide my clients with a visual memory of their favorite people. It is a privilege to witness such a personal, meaningful event in their lives. I will never take that for granted.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in weddings, boudoir and events. I’m very proud of not only the quality of the artistry I provide, but also of the ability to make my clients feel comfortable. This is crucial for both weddings and boudoir. I work almost exclusively with people who are going through something personal and vulnerable, and I thrive in those spaces. It is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do. All of my boudoir clients are working on their own evolution, whether that includes learning to love themselves and their bodies, going through a difficult medical situation, or the beginning or ending of a relationship. It’s inspiring to see women defy societal expectations and learn to believe they are good enough, as is.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Attending art school gave me the time and resources to learn, but the real knowledge came from real world experience. I highly recommend finding a photographer to assist and observe while they are actively working. Reach out to the artists you admire and ask if you can shadow. This will help with understanding the type of language needed to communicate to your clients, as well as how to be confident in yourself. Having said that, the most important piece of advice I can give; just get out there and shoot. Photograph anything and everything you can, as often as you can. Nothing compares to that.
