Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Barfuss.
Kyle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, my name is Kyle Barfuss. I started Service Ranker in 2019 after spending 10 years in the United States Marine Corps and another five years building and marketing automated software products of my own. Those experiences shaped a lot of how I approach business today. The Marine Corps taught me discipline, accountability, and how to stay focused on results, while the software side taught me how systems, automation, and digital marketing actually work behind the scenes.
Before starting the company, I kept seeing the same problem over and over with local service businesses. Good operators were hiring marketing agencies, spending thousands of dollars every month, and getting reports full of impressions, rankings, and click-through rates, but not seeing meaningful growth in calls or revenue. Then when they canceled, they often realized they didn’t even own their website or marketing assets.
That never sat right with me.
So I built Service Ranker to be the opposite of that model. From day one, the focus has been on building marketing systems that clients actually own, measuring performance in leads and revenue instead of vanity metrics, and keeping everything transparent and straightforward.
Over the last six years, we’ve worked primarily with home service businesses like towing companies, septic services, HVAC companies, plumbers, roofers, electricians, pest control companies, dumpster rental companies, land clearing contractors, and similar local trades. We also work with law firms that want a stronger digital presence and better lead generation systems. Most of our clients are owner-operators or small teams that genuinely care about the quality of their work and want an online presence that reflects that.
Today, our work centers around building websites, improving local SEO and AI search visibility, running Google Ads and social campaigns, publishing content, and tracking every lead back to actual business results. The goal is simple: help good businesses generate more calls and grow sustainably.
On a personal level, my faith in God has had a major impact on where I am today, both in business and in life. It has shaped the way I lead, the way I treat people, and the standards I try to hold myself to every day.
I’ve been married to my wife, Raesha, since 2009, and she serves as the business manager here at Service Ranker. We have a son, Brandon, who is autistic, incredibly unique, and one of the most creative and animated kids I’ve ever met. We also have our golden retriever, Luke, who’s basically part of the family.
Outside of work, we spend a lot of time together outdoors. Our family loves RV traveling, camping, exploring new places, working out, and finding new adventures whenever we can. Those experiences and the time we spend together as a family are a big part of what keeps me grounded and motivated.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and honestly, I think that’s true for most business owners who are building something from the ground up.
One of the biggest challenges early on was simply earning trust in an industry that has a pretty bad reputation. A lot of business owners had already been burned by marketing agencies before talking to us. They were skeptical, frustrated, and tired of hearing promises that never translated into actual calls or revenue. That meant we had to work twice as hard to prove ourselves and let results speak for us over time.
Another challenge was learning how to balance growth with quality. Early on, it’s tempting to say yes to every opportunity, every client, and every new service. But I realized pretty quickly that scaling the wrong way can hurt both the business and the clients you serve. We became much more intentional about who we work with and focused on building systems that actually produce measurable results instead of trying to become another large-volume agency.
The digital marketing industry itself changes constantly too. Google changes. AI search is changing the landscape right now. Consumer behavior changes. What worked five years ago doesn’t necessarily work today. Staying ahead means constantly adapting, learning, testing, and evolving while still delivering consistent results for clients.
There have also been personal challenges behind the scenes that most people never see. Running a business while raising a family, navigating the uncertainty that comes with entrepreneurship, and balancing work with being present at home is not always easy. Our son Brandon is autistic and incredibly unique, and that journey has taught me a lot about patience, perspective, and what actually matters in life.
At the same time, those experiences have probably shaped me more than the easy moments ever could. My faith in God has played a huge role in helping me stay grounded through difficult seasons, and my family has been a constant source of motivation throughout the process.
Looking back, I think the biggest lesson is that building a business is really about consistency. There’s no shortcut. You just keep showing up, keep improving, keep taking care of people, and over time the right opportunities start compounding.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Service Ranker?
Service Ranker is a digital marketing agency built specifically for local service businesses that depend on inbound calls and qualified leads to grow. We primarily work with home service companies like towing businesses, septic services, HVAC companies, plumbers, electricians, roofers, pest control companies, dumpster rental companies, land clearing contractors, and similar trades. We also work with law firms that want stronger online visibility and better lead generation systems.
What makes us different is that we focus on building marketing infrastructure, not just running campaigns. A lot of agencies sell disconnected services or flood clients with vanity metrics that don’t really mean much to the business owner. Our approach is centered around building systems that generate measurable business results.
That includes custom websites, local SEO, AI search optimization, Google Ads, social media advertising, content creation, lead tracking, and reporting tied directly to calls and revenue. We want clients to know exactly where their leads are coming from and what their marketing dollars are actually producing.
One of the things we’re most known for is transparency. We operate month-to-month with no long-term contracts because we believe the work should speak for itself. Clients own their websites, content, and assets from day one. If they ever decide to leave, they take everything with them. Unfortunately, that’s not always common in this industry.
We’re also very intentional about the types of clients we work with. Most of our clients are owner-operators or small teams that genuinely care about the quality of their work and the reputation they’ve built in their community. We work best with businesses that value long-term growth and want a marketing partner who’s straightforward, accountable, and focused on real results.
From a brand perspective, I’m probably most proud of the trust we’ve built over the years. We’ve grown largely through referrals, reputation, and long-term client relationships rather than flashy sales tactics. That means a lot to me because it reflects the kind of company we’ve tried to build from the beginning.
At the end of the day, we want people to know that Service Ranker was built to solve a problem. Too many good businesses were getting burned by bad marketing. Our goal has always been to provide an honest, results-driven alternative that helps local businesses grow while giving them full ownership and visibility into their marketing systems.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is, honestly, pretty simple: faith, family, and building something meaningful.
My relationship with God has had a major impact on my life and the way I approach business, leadership, and challenges. It keeps me grounded and reminds me what actually matters beyond work and success.
Outside of business, my family is everything to me. My wife, Raesha, and I have been married since 2009, and building both a family and a business together has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life. Our son Brandon brings a unique perspective to the world, and being his dad has taught me patience, perspective, and how to appreciate the small things. We also have our golden retriever, Luke, who’s always part of the adventure.
Some of our best memories come from spending time outdoors together. We do a lot of RV traveling, camping, exploring new places, working out, and just disconnecting from the noise for a while. Those moments recharge me more than anything else.
From a business standpoint, what really motivates me is helping good business owners win. I genuinely enjoy seeing hardworking operators finally get the visibility, leads, and growth they deserve after years of frustration with bad marketing experiences. Knowing that the systems we build are helping families and businesses grow is something I take a lot of pride in.
