Conversations with Jules

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jules.

Hi Jules, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve done so much to lead me where I am today. I was a gymnast for seven years in my hometown, Shreveport, Louisiana. After I won gymnastic state my senior year, I knew it was the end of that journey. I would have to find something new in Austin, Texas. About one year into moving to Austin, I found pole dancing, and learn my love for dance. Six months into pole dancing, I ventured out into hip hop, which inevitably led me to heels dancing. At first I started casually, and suddenly I was getting asked to do performances, and that led to music videos and showcases. I decided to lean into that side of my life and embrace that I might be able to do something with dance. After a few performances, I started to get intrigued with modeling; I always wanted to do it, but didn’t know how. That was until I met models in the dance community, who helped me scrape together a silly little comp card, and apply for Austin fashion week. I was so nervous for the audition, but I knew my performance background would help me get through; and that’s when I booked my first modeling gig. From there, I continue to push myself to do more and widen my experience. I always try to do something slightly bigger than the last. Thats where I am today, beginning this exciting modeling journey while continue the road to dancing my way onto a big stage.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been easy. When I first moved to Texas, I lived in San Marcos, driving to school in Austin everyday. I couldn’t get a job because nobody could accommodate my school schedule and commute, and eventually, I would learn that my car engine was going to break down on me. My family does not come from money, so by the time this was all happening, I had nobody to fall onto. Somehow I found a way to break my lease, move into Austin, get my car fixed, get my first job in Austin, and graduate with straight A’s. After all of that, I was finally able to sit with myself and ask what I wanted, and then I started my pole journey, which led me to everything else. Of course there were many big struggles between pole dancing and now. For instance, my car was stolen in front of my house, I got the car back, the engine failed 2 more times, major family deaths, and I was doing all of this alone. All of that to say, now I bought myself a nice new car, and use it to travel which I couldn’t do before. I live by myself in a place that I am proud to bring my friends. I am fully financially independent, and still able to enjoy life. It’s taken a long time to get here, alongside many more problems I can’t even begin to bring up. I have worked very hard, and the vision I have for my life is much louder than any struggle that could come my way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Dancer and Model! I specialize in heels style dancing. More specifically, I’m known for my athleticism within dance, and my energy/walk within the modeling community! My choreography is something I hold very dear to my heart, in which a lot of my time is spent doing. I try to focus on musicality as-well as experiential shapes and movement with my combos, which helps me make a piece that feels very me. What sets me apart from others is my ability to adapt to any situation. I try to keep my skill level varied so I have experience in anything that may come my way!

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk are absolutely necessary in the dancing and modeling industry. If I didn’t take every dance class I viewed as a risk, I wouldn’t have grown as a professional. If I didn’t take a chance and apply for Austin fashion weeks runway with no experience behind me, I would not have started my modeling journey. Everything I’ve done in these industries is a risk; that’s how the most growth happens.
