Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Knight.
Hi Kay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I actually started out homeless, with no home of my own. Even being on the streets, I was not content with my situation. So I sought ways to get up and out of my situation. I got a job cutting grass, then I had a friend that I used to spend time with who motivated me to do better for myself. I want to create a way to leave a lasting impression of myself in the world. As an artist, my mind first went to art, but that wasn’t enough, my friend suggested t-shirts. So in 2016 was the birth of the Knightwear Clothing Co concept, and it wasn’t until later in the year that I was able to solidify it as a legitimate business. Fast forward, I have been able to develop relationships with other businesses and business-minded individuals. I grew Knightwear into providing custom shirts for others, from just dropshipping to purchasing my own printing equipment. In the past six years, I have not only started and grew a business, but I’ve also gotten married and have three girls. The journey has been up and down, but the best is yet to come.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been easy or smooth by any stretch. I have had orders I could not fulfill because of a lack of research. I have lost opportunities that I knew I could get. I struggled financially, having to get a job to support my business, the road has not been smooth, but worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love art. I haven’t done it recently, but I grew up drawing very well. But now as a graphic artist, I enjoy building logos for businesses or creating flyers and business card designs. I specialize in video editing, logo animations, and I am very proud of the video intros I have been able to do. I believe not only being a designer for shirts but being able to expand into digital graphics that I learned on my own sets me apart from others.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up a military brat, and I was very active. The only time I was still and quiet was when I was drawing or reading a book, I love to read. I received a lot of praise for my art growing up, so I was always motivated to improve my work. Growing up in church helped me make it through many trials as a child. It helped me become the man I am today, to be and remain optimistic about any outcome.
