Today we’d like to introduce you to Tommy & Becky White.
Hi Tommy & Becky, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We are Tommy and Becky White. We have been married for 27 years and have two daughters, Amber(21), Jaden(18), and our beloved mini schnauzer, Harley. We are a family who loves travel and have visited amazing locations all around the world as well as the in the U.S. We are an extremely creative family and have always shared an entrepreneurial spirit, often discussing the kind of business that we could visualize ourselves opening and running. Even though it’s a very common type of small business to open, we quickly ruled out food service as something that we have no interest in pursuing. Likewise, many other types of business we have researched have never really felt like a good fit. However, upon discovering the Bricks and Minifigs model, we both felt that this is something we would really enjoy as it combines many qualities that speak to us. One of the largest is our love of Lego, but also bringing joy to both the young and old, it’s a very creative environment and one that we hope has become a valued part of the community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening a business of any size is probably never a smooth road. We do our best to plan ahead and look for any bumps in the road, but when working towards grand opening we had the usual construction concerns, having enough inventory, final details, understanding how everything worked. But nothing insurmountable. Currently our struggles mainly revolve around staffing, seasonality, and planning ahead. We have an awesome staff and community supporting us, which go a long way toward smoothing out the road.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We didn’t open Bricks & Minifigs because we wanted to sell LEGO. We opened it because we believe communities need more places where families can spend time together, be creative, and simply have fun.
Bricks & Minifigs South Austin is a locally owned LEGO resale store specializing in pre-owned sets, minifigures, and bulk LEGO. Customers can buy, sell, and trade with us, whether they’re looking for retired collectibles, affordable building options, or a specific minifigure they’ve been hunting for.
What we’re most proud of, though, is the community we’ve built around play. We host birthday parties, summer camps, team-building events, building contests, and community activities that bring people together across generations. We regularly see parents building alongside their children, grandparents sharing a hobby with grandchildren, and adults reconnecting with creativity they thought they’d left behind.
In a world where so much of life happens through screens, we’re proud to provide a place where people can create something with their hands, connect with others, and experience the joy of play.
What makes you happy?
Our family, our kids, and our miniature schnauzer make us happy. Beyond that, bringing joy to others and helping build community gives us a great deal of happiness as well.
One of the best parts of what we do is seeing smiling faces every day. We believe the world can always use a little more fun, creativity, and connection—and the smiles that come from those experiences are contagious.
