Today we’d like to introduce you to Chemise McCain.
Hi Chemise, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, like most graduating seniors, I was uncertain about my next steps. I wondered if I should move back home to Houston, head to New York, or maybe go to grad school. It was definitely a time of exploration. While searching for an apartment, I met a friend who worked as an apartment locator, and that sparked my interest in the world of real estate. I decided to get my real estate license and began showing not only apartments but also new homes. I discovered the role of new home sales counselors for new home builders, and that’s how my journey began. I enjoyed helping people find their dream homes, and that passion carried me forward. I sent my resume out to every builder in the Austin area, and in 2004, KB Home invited me for an interview. I’ve been with the company for over 20 years now, progressing through various roles until I became the first female division president of the Austin division.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Is any journey truly smooth? I believe that any path worth taking comes with its own challenges. If things feel too easy and comfortable, it might mean you’re not pushing yourself enough. When I was new in my career as a new home sales counselor, I quickly realized that the schedule would be far different than anything I was previously used to, and that the pressure of being 100% commission-based would require changes to how I managed my life. It definitely wasn’t easy and required serious adjustments. I had to change my mindset, quickly form better habits, and embrace that discomfort of growth. It wasn’t just about overcoming obstacles, but also about proving my value and staying resilient. As I grew with the company and took on roles with increased levels of responsibility and leadership, I encountered new and different challenges with each change. In the end, I’m proud that I didn’t let those early roadblocks and struggles stop me from pursuing my long-term goals. Ultimately, growth is about stepping into the unknown, because you haven’t fully met that new version of yourself yet. So, embrace the rocky terrain, because that’s where the growth happens.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I consider myself a relationship-oriented leader, and I’m particularly proud of the incredible tenure we have on our leadership team—on average, 18 years, which is pretty rare these days. It really shows how important it is to foster a winning culture and reinforce that through our people. Some of my key strengths involve developing our team members individually as well as fostering stronger relationships between departments, resulting in a more cohesive division that functions as a fully connected unit. This elevates the performance of each department as well as the business as a whole. To develop our leadership team, I created and implemented a program called ‘Connect the Tops’, which deepens our understanding of each department and improves communication and collaboration through a rotating interdepartmental training initiative. Our mantra in the Austin division is ‘How can I help?’ and that keeps us focused on solutions and minimizes drama. Additionally, I organized a CliftonStrengths workshop for the team, helping each leader identify and leverage their unique strengths. This not only boosts productivity but also enhances collaboration. Ultimately, my focus is on supporting team dynamics, communication, and engagement, ensuring that our experienced team continues to grow stronger, builds trust, and aligns better on projects.
And what I’m most proud of? Honestly, it’s my team. I’m surrounded by experts, and I’m grateful for the chance to lead and work alongside them every day. It’s truly rewarding to see what we’ve built together. And on top of that, we’ve been one of the most profitable divisions for five years running, which is definitely something to celebrate!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
On a personal note, I’m really into fitness and love heathy eating, working out and lifting weights. I’ve been married for 17 years and I’m also a dedicated momager for our daughter, who has been acting since she was very young, including in guest star roles on major television series and in national commercials. We’re big fans of Broadway shows in New York, love supporting the arts, and enjoy traveling the world. We also love to spoil our two adorable Maltese dogs who bring so much joy and adventure to our lives. And we’re total suckers for a Disney cruise!
