Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Weltner.
Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was just your average brand designer living in San Francisco when I got an idea that would change my world. I was upside down doing a headstand in a yoga class and my t-shirt kept hitting me in the face. I thought “what if I just wore a jumpsuit to yoga?” Then JOMPER was born. I started wearing a jumpsuit everywhere and thinking through functional fashion problems. I realized girls LOVED jumpsuits but couldn’t find one that flattered their body shape or one that was easy to change in and out of. So I invented a hidden butt-flap for quicker bathroom visits and the rest is history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish it was easy! I lost friends, upset family, went through depression and major debt. It was NOT an easy path for me. It took 8ish years of struggle to finally get into stores and have a product women love. I could sit here and blame my ADHD, or the fact that I’m a “Creative” founder, or that I chose to bootstrap … But those are also the things that have made my brand unique and my story memorable. I’m really proud that I stuck with it. Good things happen with enough hard work and love! You can only fail if you stop. 🙂
We’ve been impressed with JOMPER, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
JOMPER makes athleisure jumpsuits that you can wear to school and “go out” in. I’m the founder and Creative Director, so focus on motivating the team, creating new styles and coming up with fun campaigns. I’m most excited for our custom prints coming out for Spring 2022.
My background as an Art Director shaped how I solve apparel problems. I think about 1) Function 2) Fit 3) Fun! What sets us apart is our brand — we don’t take ourselves too seriously. I mean it’s fashion :).
I’m most proud of getting into Halls, a department store in Kansas City where I’m from. It’s every designer’s dream to be in a department store! I’m also tickled to announce that Alonso, one of the directors of Gucci, is our newly appointed CEO! I couldn’t be happier for this recent partnership. Our first project together is we’re building a virtual store in the METAVERSE using blockchain technology… We’ll launch that in April on our site Jomper.co. Stay tuned 🙂
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Follow the fun! In 2020 I lost my day job, so I rallied a team and built a virtual world for Burning Man — that same team is now building Jomper’s virtual store.
In October of 2020, 30 of my friends decided to “migrate” from San Francisco to Maui to “escape” for a year. We supported each other as artists and entrepreneurs. It allowed me to shut out all the distractions, hit the beach and relaxxxx. 2021 was the year JOMPER really started taking off. I made silly videos of me tie-dying the jumpsuits, got into a few stores, and met Alonso, my fashion muse and current CEO. You never know what an adventure will bring you and JOMPER is designed for those wild journeys! I’m so happy I landed back on the mainland in Austin. I knew Austin was the right move for me and JOMPER because of all the creative entrepreneurs living here. 🙂
