Rising Stars: Meet Abby Ketcham of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Ketcham

Hi Abby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Austin in August of 2001, & moved around Central Texas while growing up. I graduated from Anderson High School here in Austin in 2019, then went to Austin Community College to study American Sign Language. I was able to stay for a semester and a half, then dropped out during covid. Once I dropped out of ACC, I was encouraged by other artists, specifically my soon to be sister-in-law, @westcoast_kassy , to sell my artwork at pop-up markets around the city. I quickly fell in love with the concept of pop-up markets, because it allows various creatives to get together & ultimately celebrate the power of communities. I have always seen the unique beauty the city of Austin had to offer ever since I was a young. Too bad I wasn’t old enough to invest in property back in the early 2000s… haha! As of now, I am working on other means of being creative such as learning how to sing. I have been learning how to sing for the past 9 months, & it has helped me in many different aspects of my life, that I initially wouldn’t have thought of going into it. I will also be getting married this March, & will be a step mother to two beautiful children! <3 My life has always been filled with unexpected opportunities, & it has always put me exactly where I need to be, & I thank God every day for the life I live.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My life has always been a roller coaster, but I’ve been learning to let go of the bar and surrender to the twists and turns of it all. If life weren’t to have struggles how would we grow? Life is about keeping your spirit strong through the tribulations of life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I like to say i’m a jack of all trades, but sometimes that saying can give off the wrong impression, because people don’t know the full saying. It’s “A jack of all trades is a master of none. But often times better than a master of none.”
I highly value independent study, which gives me the freedom to study all which I am drawn too, & yearn to learn. When I left college I started studying Philosophy & quickly fell in love with the works of Marie Louise Von Franz, who was a colleague of Carl Yung. I have spent much time in coffee shops hovering over my books for hours on end.
I also have been playing competitive pool for the past year and a half. My team recently made Tri-Cups, which I’m very excited about!
I would say ultimately I’m most proud of the community I have built for myself. I always love meeting new people, & have made quite the number of connections just by being at those coffee shops for all those hours.
I believe everyone is a creative, but they just haven’t discovered that to be a fact. Majority of people have no idea just how creative they are, because they weren’t given the space for expression they needed while growing up. I was one of those kids, but as we grow into adults, we have to create that space for expression ourselves.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I hope those who read this find inspriation to discover & nurture the creative side of themselves that has always been there.
