Today we’d like to introduce you to Davis Couch
Hi Davis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started playing the guitar around age 12. I would sneak into my oldest brother’s room to grab his seldom-used guitar, producing what could best be described as “noise.” Eventually, I acquired a chord chart, teaching myself simple chords and progressions. I remember playing for so long one day that my fingers were raw. I would just put band-aids on them and keep going. I performed “Island in the Sun” at my 5th-grade talent show and can still vividly recall standing on stage, feeling like I truly belonged there.
I continued playing guitar through middle school and high school, and then attended Visible Music College in Memphis, TN, where I majored in songwriting and minored in guitar—ironically not doing too well in the latter. After one semester, I dropped out and pursued a “normal” life at the University of North Georgia, putting the guitar on the back burner for many years.
It wasn’t until COVID-19 forced us into lockdown that I picked up my guitar again. Locked in my house in Georgia with nowhere to go, I decided to post TikToks. I shared a few covers and an original song, receiving really positive responses. This reignited my passion for music. After attending a Bon Iver concert in Austin, with opener Dijon—who performed “Rodeo Clown” with its compelling chorus, “What are you so afraid of? You’re missing out on good, good loving”—I realized I was stuck in Georgia because I feared change. Right there in the Austin airport, I signed a lease to move the following month. I hadn’t planned on becoming a musician in Austin; I just fell in love with the city and craved a change.
Once settled, I started attending open mics, like Freddo ATX on Congress, run by Convergent Arts. There, I found close friends and like-minded people. My first big break was being asked to perform at First Friday. This marked the beginning of a now two-year journey of doing open mics, recording my music, playing local shows, and showcasing my work. I now have three singles on Spotify and an upcoming EP set for release at the year’s end. Although I’m still navigating the complex world of music and have made many mistakes, each one has taught me to keep doing my best and learning from past errors.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road.
Financially, it has been a struggle to record my own music. Hiring musicians, paying for studio time, and buying home equipment have posed extreme challenges, but it has been rewarding, to say the least.
Posting on social media and staying consistent enough to post every day has been tough, especially when some posts get no likes or views. It’s always the videos I least expect that end up doing well.
Another challenging aspect has been dealing with different personalities and attitudes in the local scene. I’ve butted heads with some people in the past, but I am learning not to take things so personally and to keep growing from each experience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a singer-songwriter specializing in indie folk/alternative music. I am known for my lyrical strength and my ability to convey raw and authentic emotions through my music. As a multi-instrumentalist, what I am most proud of are my vocal skills alongside my lyrical abilities. What sets me apart is my capacity to be vulnerable and honest in my lyrics, which is evident in my performances.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
As an artist, I define success through two key elements: artistic fulfillment and audience connection. To me, achieving success means creating music that remains true to my personal vision and expressive goals. It’s about feeling a deep sense of satisfaction in my work, knowing that it represents my true self. Equally important is the connection with my audience—whether it’s through live performances, recordings, or digital interactions. Success is when my music resonates with listeners, moving them emotionally and creating lasting memories. This dual focus keeps my artistic journey both meaningful and rewarding.
