Rising Stars: Meet Sara Rudin of Round Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Rudin.

Hi Sara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I actually discovered baton twirling by accident! When I was six years old, I found my mom’s old batons in her closet. That little discovery led us to find out my aunt had been a nationally ranked twirler. From that moment on, my sister and I were hooked. I started out twirling with a group, then moved to Texas where I focused on solo competitions. I eventually went on to twirl in college and became the captain of the twirling line, which was such an incredible experience.
Years later, my son, who had a speech delay, unknowingly inspired the next chapter of my journey. One day, he picked up a baton and perfectly mimicked a trick I had filmed on my phone. Seeing how he learned visually, even before he could form full sentences, made me realize how powerful baton twirling could be as a teaching tool. That moment sparked the creation of my video lessons and, ultimately, my business.
Now, through Honeybee Twirlers and Baton Twirling 101, I get to share my passion with hundreds of thousands of people online. My mission is to help grow the sport of baton twirling and make it popular again, while helping others find confidence and joy through learning. Over the years, I’ve learned that coaching means balancing different personalities and trusting my instincts, but seeing students finally master a skill they’ve been working on for years makes it all worth it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped me grow. Early on, I had to make a tough decision to walk away from a coaching situation that didn’t align with the positive, growth-focused environment I wanted for my students. It was scary to start over, but I knew in my heart it was the right move. Someone even told me teaching baton twirling online would never work, and that comment became my motivation to prove it could.

Like most small business owners, I also struggled with trying to do everything myself and finding the right space to teach. That all changed when I connected with the amazing owners of OBK Fitness in Round Rock, who welcomed me into their gym and reminded me how important community and collaboration are. They told me, “We literally drop weights on the floor. Your batons will be fine!” and that moment truly marked a turning point. Secondly, finding my other coach has literally been the reason I keep going. We align on philosophies, and we work so well together. I have hit the jackpot when it comes to finding the perfect coach!

Through it all, I’ve learned to trust my instincts, focus on creating a supportive environment for kids, and remember that family – mine and my students’ – always comes first. Every challenge has led to something even better.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I teach baton twirling in a way anyone can understand, whether it’s a brand-new beginner or a seasoned coach looking to grow their skills. Through my programs, Honeybee Twirlers and Baton Twirling 101, I’ve helped students across the country learn baton twirling in a fun, encouraging, and confidence-building environment. I’m most proud of seeing my students reach their goals, whether it’s finally mastering a tricky spin or achieving a title they’ve dreamed about for years.
People often describe me as positive, patient, and detailed. I make sure no one ever feels “behind” in class by breaking down every move from the very beginning. I’ve found that when students feel supported, they’re more willing to try, and that’s where the magic happens.
While I’ve built a social-media following of over 10,000 by sharing baton twirling tutorials and tips, my favorite moments are still the in-person ones: those squeal-worthy times when a student nails a move they’ve been practicing for weeks. That pure excitement and confidence is what sets my work apart, and it’s why I’ll always love what I do.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest advice for anyone just starting out is to find someone who’s already done what you want to do and learn from them. Follow their blueprint, take notes, and then make it your own. You know yourself better than anyone, so if something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and pivot. That’s where real growth happens.
When I first started building my online course, Baton Twirling 101, I poured my heart into creating something that would help new coaches avoid the same struggles I faced when starting my own group. I spent years perfecting it before releasing it, until one day I heard Amy Porterfield say, “Just release what you have. The first version is never supposed to be amazing.” That was the push I finally needed to launch.
Not everything went perfectly. My first book received a few one-star reviews from people who misunderstood its purpose. But instead of letting that discourage me, I saw it as feedback and used it to make my future books clearer and stronger. Now all my books and resources sell really well. So my advice is this: Start before you’re ready, learn as you go, and never let fear stop you from creating something amazing. The imperfect first version is always better than the version that never gets shared.
