Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Cowan.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My interest in astrology began when I was nine years old when I first read my horoscope in the back of a magazine. Given its references to Greek and Roman mythology, a subject I was very interested in at the time, I was immediately intrigued and knew I had to learn more. I soon found myself sneaking onto AOL after school to read more about astrology on tarot.com and gURL.com, looking at books, and even going as far as having my classmates write down their names next to their sign on a piece of paper so I could observe their behavior compared to what I was teaching myself. I spent the better part of my teens and 20s fine-tuning my chart reading skills and further learning various techniques and methods of interpretation, figuring out what worked best for me. Honestly, I would say that Covid was probably the biggest push for me to turn my lifelong passion and hobby into a business and start reading natal charts as a source of income. I’m glad I finally decided to just go for it because I have been able to connect with so many wonderful people both here in the Austin metaphysical community and the global astrology community at large via social media.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! Running a business, no matter what it is, takes a lot of time and effort coupled with a healthy dose of trial and error. What may have worked in the beginning now no longer works and needs changing, or what you thought was a good idea turned out to be the exact opposite. You really just have to roll up your sleeves, put forth the effort, and say “screw it” and let things fall where they will. I am also a licensed esthetician and had to learn how to balance the changes with my schedule at my day job with my personal business as an astrologer.
We’ve been impressed with 6th House Astro, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a self-taught astrologer with over two decades worth of experience reading and interpreting astrological charts using western astrology with psychological techniques. I operate as 6th House Astro both on my own and as the resident astrologer at Yarrow and Sage here in Austin. I provide your typical birth chart reading to help you understand your natal chart better, but I also provide other astrology-based services. I began my practice by creating my one-of-a-kind Daily Habits and Routines Readings, where I take a look at your 6th house (the part of the chart that rules routines and habits) and help you come up with a healthier daily routine and activities that align with your current lifestyle and schedule. I also use transit charts to provide guidance for what’s going on in your life now or what could impact you in the future, new and full moon readings, synastry chart readings between two people for compatibility, card readings with an astrology- themed oracle deck, Saturn returns readings, and I recently added astrocartography readings, where I plug your birth chart data into a map and use location-based astrology to determine auspicious places for you in terms of self-growth, career, love, etc. I plan to add different types of readings in the future. What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
So far, I’ve learned to always update your booking calendar if your schedule changes as soon as possible. Having to reschedule several readings when you are going to be at work instead is stressful.
