Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Samuel.
Hi Richard, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Well, my name is Richard Samuel, local watercolor, graphic designer, and owner of Richesart gallery.
I’ve been doing art my whole life but always thought of it as a hobby. Always second to chasing my dreams to play in the NFL. The dream didn’t play out but I did end up playing professionally in Europe for six years. In Germany, I got the opportunity to have my own solo exhibition at a local gallery in Bavaria. I ended up being the most successful solo artist that the gallery ever had. That was my first experience selling my art. This gave me the motivation to start my own art business. After I retired all the ambition, I poured into my craft as a football player was transferred to Art. Long story short, I worked my ass off and got to a point where imagined opening up my own art gallery. It was at this time I was faced with another big crossroad. The coaching jobs started pouring in now that I was retired. Being that I groomed myself my whole life to be coach, my degree, my resume, my ideology. I felt as if I had to go back to football. I even accepted a coaching job in Europe. I was so unhappy though. Doing everything the job required my art was suffering. It was at the point I realized that art wasn’t my hobby my whole life and football wasn’t my true love the roles were reversed. I just have always took art for granted. With this new epiphany, I quit my coaching job and opened up Richesart gallery here on the east side of Austin. It has been the best decision I have ever made.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So many struggles but nothing worth having in life is easy.
Doors were constantly slammed in my face. Opportunities were wasted, bad decisions were made.
There were times I was so broke that I questioned all my life decisions.
I have absolutely no quit in me though and I just kept plugging away.
One thing that I have found out is best thing for a full-time artist is different revenue streams. I constantly challenge myself to have different ways to make money from my art. Therefore I never depend on just commissions or gallery sales. Makes life alot less stressful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk are key to opening doors, networking, and gaining opportunities. Every risk no matter what, yields some type of positivity. Whether it’s down the road or immediately.
I’ve become so used to the idea of taking risks that my fear of failure is gone.
Pricing:
- Best way to price art that can be explained to a normal Patreon is to price yourself hourly. Therefore if you value yourself as a $30/hr artist and a piece takes you 10 hours. The you price the piece at $300 plus supplies. By doing this method you can sell your art to someone easier by giving them something to relate to.
- I have prints available in all sizes. From 8.5×11 photo paper to 60inx40in canvas prints. My prints range from $10- $300
