Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Dunn.
Hi Jasmin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! Thank you so much for having me. My name is Jasmin La’Shon Dunn. I am a 28 year old freelance photographer, videographer and content creator.
One cherished Christmas, I was gifted my first Canon Rebel T5. I was 22 at the time. I started out slowly building my portfolio by shooting family and friends. Six years later, I now employ myself. Living my dream full time as a photographer. I’m also partnering with a fellow friend and colleague to open our first studio here in my hometown of Killeen, TX.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all, ha! Working for myself feels more like a 24/7 work schedule versus when I worked for other corporations, I’d clock 8 hours a day five days out of the week max. I have the amazing opportunity to travel and capture these beautiful moments but I wear many other hats as well. Creative directing, accounting, photo editor, content creator, etc all while being a single mom. There have been threats of lawsuits loss of income from unpaid gigs….it’s not always pretty but I’ve learned and grown so much. And every obstacle I overcome always has a way of setting me up for something bigger and better than I could have ever imagined.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do? How does it set you apart from others? What are you most proud of?
I am a photographer, photo editor and creative director. Content creator is my specialty and what I’m best known for. What sets me apart from other creators is my creative eye. I’m most proud of not giving up on my dreams. There was a time I went from becoming a mother to working for myself then back to working for someone else then back to working for myself again.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Absolutely! There’s this app that I use called the Preview app that’s really helpful with creating posts. And Pixieset assists me with booking on my website, delivers photos to clients and sends invoices and contracts. Personally, I’m currently reading “in My Cocoon” (Reyna Noriega) and the poems have been really encouraging especially when it comes to love. Poetry gives me inspiration and positivity.
