Conversations with Jessica Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Gonzalez.

Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was teaching English on the side while working at an after-school program during the pandemic and realized that I enjoyed the unlimited freedom that I was given to create learning materials and invest in different avenues that I genuinely enjoyed learning about myself like my writing, understanding the different aspects of running a business, and learning elements of producing content. I figured to take the risk and quit my 9-5 and pursue online education full time and see what I can do from there! I have been able to open up my own business and partner with various educational companies to build my skills and learn more tricks of the trade in regard to making my own curriculums and marketing my services. I am so happy with where I am at now and I am so excited for future projects to be released ranging from creative classes to books and documentaries!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wish it was! It was difficult in the beginning when I joined VIPKid which was my first real experience in self-employment/ running a business. It was the middle of the pandemic and I only had one student for the first 8 months, making only $80 every two months. I had a small space on the floor of my room where I would teach because I had no space and only had a small little presentation board for my classroom. Once I got my first positive review of my skills, I saw my business skyrocket with students wanting to take classes with me left and right! Eventually, I started working with other platforms because I was gaining more experience in the online education community, it also gave me the ability to start publishing my own books and designing my own courses based off my knowledge of the arts and science. I went from teaching on the floor of my room in my parent’s apartment in New York City to having my own space to work and create my courses and projects!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an online educator and mentor as well as a creative on the side. I’ll break that down a little more; I tutor students of all ages in every subject (expect spelling because I am not the best, lolz) and help them prepare for the next grade and future endeavours once they graduate high school. I also offer specialized courses in writing, art, and science on Outschool; my courses range from exploring different forms of writing to curly hair science to house dancing. When I am not teaching, I am expanding other endeavours such as my own publishing company and creating courses and educational technology! What makes me different is I refer to myself as a “Jack of All Trades” hence my company name “Jessica of All Trades” because while my main focus in education, I don’t like to confine myself into a box and always looking for new ways to expand myself and elevate my business. I am constantly studying the newest things in art production and psychology. I think anyone can achieve anything they set their minds to if they believe in themselves. I am proud of the fact that I have made it this far because I did not ever think that I could be my own boss; I always thought I was ordinary and that I was going to be another worker but anything is possible with ambition, a plan, and a little luck.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I use so many apps to help myself improve such as YouTube for learning what’s the latest in education, psychology, and art. I use various systems like Notion, SignWell, and other things to help run my business efficiently. Some of the best books I have read are Rich Dad, Poor Dad, The 48 Laws of Power, and How to Make Friends and Influence People! I run my own personal blog that helps document the ups and downs of online education, running your own business, and being an autodidact.
