Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristie Barrett.
Hi Kristie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved graphic design and one of my first real jobs was ad design for four newspapers. Through the years I have started little businesses and LOVED doing the website design and marketing, but the job part of it wasn’t my thing for one reason or another. Then I decided why not help other businesses get a beautiful website and help with their marketing. It has become a huge success, especially with Doulas.
In fact, I have a sister company dedicated just to Doulas and their needs as a business in terms of marketing and website design. This is where some of my strongest work is. I want each doula website to tell the story of the doula just through the website itself. Doulas are people who you need to connect with and I want that connection to start the moment someone looks at their website. Today I am creating numerous websites a month and love every minute of it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Relatively speaking, YES! I started the business as a hobby to have a creative outlet and it’s blossomed from there. So I didn’t have a ton of pressure on me to make money to feed my kids or anything like that. It was more just a learning curve of learning ways to automate and outsource things like bookkeeping and blog writing etc.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for creating beautiful websites for other small businesses by reading between the lines of what the client is looking for. I don’t do cookie cutter websites, I create a lot of websites for Doulas and love making them completely unique to my client. When their potential clients go on their website I want them to feel connected to the doula prior to even making contact.
I am proud of the spectrum of websites I’ve created for birth and postpartum doulas that include, Rosie the Riviter, Black and Gold, Pastel, Retro, Gold with Hot Pink and Purple…all unique to the doula. Doula work is intimate and I want to showcase their personality to potential clients. I don’t want to do just generic baby websites. I also use a LOT of stock photography but have an eye for how to have pictures blend in to the website and not be obtrusive.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Well, without my amazing husband Ryan working fulltime to support our family there is no way I could do what I do! I have an amazing support group of friends that encourage me to keep going for it and give me feedback on my designs. I also outsource to a couple freelancers to help me out with the behind the scenes stuff that frees more time for me to design and do marketing.
