Today we’d like to introduce you to D-Soul Davis.
Hailing from Waco, Texas, Demetrius Davis started his musical career at eight years old when he took to the stage singing in a school play. He knew at that very moment, that music was his passion. This part-time fitness coach and full-time musician gained his phenomenal showmanship and, most importantly, vocal training from touring the U.S. singing gospel music with his talented family and time spent in valuable church vocal workshops.
Demetrius has been influenced by the timeless greats from the likes of James Brown and Frank Sinatra to Otis Redding and Michael Jackson. He was also influenced by his talented and beloved father, brother, and grandmother. He has a vast quantity of experience as a vocalist with bands: MatchMaker, Taboo, All U Need, Hotsauce, and his own project, D-Soul Davis Experience.
Some of his most well-known musical accomplishments include… Having his Newly Released song. “Heal This Land” open the GWEN Awards featuring Dionne Warrick on her 80th Birthday. April 6th being recognized in Austin Tx, as “D-Soul Davis Day”. Being an American Idol Top 100 Finalist in 2003. A 2016 SXSW artist Headliner, and an opening act for the AUMF from which he opened up for Maze. He has thrived in the industry and has had the honor of singing alongside Jamie Foxx, Paul Wall, Steve Miller, Ray Benson, Raheem DeVaughn, Gary Jenkins of “Silk”, The Gatlin Brothers, Huey Lewis and The News, Tony Orlando, Alexander O’Neal, Dougie Fresh, Frankie Beverley, and the gospel legend V. Michael Mckay.
Demetrius lives to bring joy to people through the power of music. His favorite moment while performing is looking out at his audience and seeing them having a great time. He is well-versed at wedding showmanship and is continuously honored to work with amazing couples on the best days of their lives. When he’s not performing, Demetrius works tirelessly towards his goals of operating his own business and becoming a motivational leader and speaker.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This thing called music can either be a roadblock or a roadway. You can make it better by understanding that everything is “earned not given”. I see a lot of upcoming acts fall flat due to this. No one owes anyone anything. You earn what is harvested. Once I realized that it takes more than just talent. My career took another turn. There’s the business side, marketing, public appearances, interviews, etc. The list goes on like the beat, but I’m truly grateful for 20-plus years of doing what I truly love.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Singer-songwriter, since the age of 16. Started singing with my family at church. Began singing R&B with my brother at 17. We wrote and recorded our first demo entitled “You’re on my Mind”. Which made a splash on the local scene in our hometown of Waco TX. It caught the ears of a local rap group Twice Tha Game. From which I was featured on the street classic “Let Me Ball”. I continued to record features until. I moved to Austin in 2003. I was introduced to a label and began focusing on my own material. I did a feature with VTA entitled “You’ve been down too long”. This song to me helped me find my sound. Once I played it back to my grandmother and she head nodded, I knew I had what it took! Haha. I feel I specialize in Soul and Blues because that sound comes out of the Church. You can’t have Soul Music without Gospel. I say this all the time. “Soul is the Baby of Gospel”. As far as what I have achieved, I feel like me having my own day April 6th in Austin is my Proudest music moment. Playing alongside Jamie Foxx and Steve Miller comes a close second respectfully. I grew up idolizing James Brown, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Ray Charles. They all knew how to entertain. I’ve always been told I bring a show no matter the size of the audience. I agree with this wholeheartedly because I always put myself in the viewer’s position. I know I like when a show is entertaining. So, I make sure I bring it every night!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Singing at a school play at Crestview Elementary and seeing all of my peers look in complete awe. No one knew I could sing because I was so shy. It built confidence in me to just be who you are and let the world discover your art and talents.
