Daily Inspiration: Meet Destany Schadder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destany Schadder.

Destany Schadder

Hi Destany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started as a child. I was always the one that others relied on, talked to, and asked for advice. I went through a lot of adversity, including surviving my mother’s mental illness. One of the hardest things to understand as a child is that your mother cannot be your mother. When clients come to me with similar stories, I can sit with them and truly understand what they are going through, and I can assure them that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have always loved movement. When I discovered that I could use it in mental health, I decided it was worth looking into, so I toured Lesley University and met Nancy Beardall; I knew my life was about to change. I was going to study physical therapy initially, and when I got into this program, I took it as a sign.

You may be asking, what exactly does this woman do? I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate who uses Dialectical Behavioral Therapy & Acceptance Commitment Therapy in my practice. Not only do I talk therapy, I leverage what I know about the body and the nervous system and how you cannot treat one and not the other. In sessions, I connect with the body using breath and posture techniques. If you are asking whether I teach dance, I do not. My supervisor Karen Finley Breeding, LPC-S, uses somatics in her work, and the two schools of thought usually attempt to separate themselves. Still, they have more in common than most realize.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
In short, I moved at the age of eighteen away from Oregon to have peace in my life. I grew up very poor. I moved in with my grandfather at the age of twelve permanently. My grandfather taught me work ethic; he taught me that life is hard, but quitting is not an option, and without him, I am still determining if Heiser Counseling would be in business. The name of the practice is his surname, Heiser. My grandfather’s nickname was Grumpy, so that you can guess his personality. It has not been a straight road. There have been a lot of turns along the way, but these turns have created a better human being. However, the road could have been smoother. I like to stay positive when I can to gravitate towards more of this in life. I learned at a young age that what you focus on, you get more of.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a therapist who uses movement practice in my work. I am young, but I can understand people in older age groups. I am proud that I am the first in my immediate family to receive not only their bachelor’s but their master’s as well.

What are your plans for the future?
Honestly, I want a balanced life. I want to show up for my client in a way that supports them.
