Daily Inspiration: Meet Y’All Hands on Deck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Y’All Hands on Deck.

Hi Y’All Hands on Deck, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After Roe was overturned, many of us were angry and upset with how so few could control the lives of so many, so we started our own grassroots organization to increase political participation by those in our social groups. It all started with a dining-table meeting, then grew to a bigger backyard patio group of Austinites who want to make a difference in the way our politics play out in Texas.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While just about everyone we know is upset about the current state of politics in Texas and earnestly wants to turn things around, people are used to being uninvolved. The energy required to get involved is more than a lot of people have. Rory, Jill and I decided we just wanted to help with that initial bump to get our social circles to up their political game and find the thing that best fits their personality and schedule to help get better public servants elected in Texas and to turn Texas Blue. The biggest obstacle to that is shifting people from their schedules and their comfort zone and getting people to commit to spending more time registering voters, hosting educational events and volunteering for campaigns.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Juliee’s an architect, interior designer & printmaker, Jill is a graphic designer and educator, and Rory is the Director of an adoption agency. We met years ago through our children’s elementary school and have stayed in touch over the years due to our shared interests and views. We are all proud of the work we do, but currently, the thing we’re collectively proud of is getting more friends and family involved in registering voters and campaigning for and electing great candidates to statewide positions in Texas that will represent us and our kids.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Right now, the best way to support our mission is to get involved! Come to one of the house parties, host a house party, register to be a Volunteer Deputy Registrar, shake some trees and get your friends and neighbors more involved. We’ve had super collaboration from friends, putting together fact-based helpful information to share with those wanting to know more about the current races and candidates to high school students rallying their peers to sign up for Absentee Ballot requests before they head off to college. It’s a team effort, and we welcome everyone to get involved. Find us at Y’All Hands on Deck on Instagram and Facebook, and at yallhandsondeck.com.
