Hi A.J., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
During my final year of law school, I pivoted towards contract lobbying as a career. Beyond the income potential (keyword potential) I felt it was more aligned with my strengths, particularly relationship-building and hustle.
In 2010, following a short stint as a Texas Capitol staffer, I began my lobbying career with a firm. Over the next seven years (and a few moves) I gained experience working at the municipal and state level. I launched The Bingham Group, LLC (Bingham Group) on April 10th, 2017 with a thesis of combining my state and local experience into one shop.
The desire to start Bingham Group first sprang up in 2015, just a voice in my head saying “You can do this.” Expanding on this, I reached a point career-wise when I looked at the top dogs (by revenue) in our business and realized the majority started their own firms. I believe I have the skills and drive to build something, develop a team, and eventually join them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. I started with zero clients with a firm that was not known and had no track record. People knew me and knew I was a lobbyist, but one working for______. Introducing them to Bingham Group as a brand, what we offered, and could do, was a big challenge in the early years.

The Bingham Group, LLC is Austin’s only Black-owned full-service lobbying firm representing and advising clients on government affairs, public affairs, and procurement matters in the Austin metro and throughout Central Texas.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has certainly played a significant role in my life and business. However, what’s sustained me has been maintaining an awareness of and seizing opportunities, obvious and non-obvious ones, as they come. And more importantly, creating opportunities rather than leaving it to chance.
